The hoo’s hoo of gibbon communication

The secret communication of gibbons has been interpreted for the first time in a study published in the open access journal BMC Evolutionary Biology. The research reveals the likely meaning of a number of distinct gibbon whispers, or 'hoo' calls, responding to particular events and types of predator, and could provide clues on the evolution of human speech. While lar gibbons (Hylobates lar) are mainly known for their loud and conspicuous songs, they can also produce a number of soft call types known as 'hoo's. These subtle calls have been alluded to in studies dating back to 1940, but due to their volume, they are virtually indistinguishable to the human ear and have been difficult to record and analyse. Researchers using modern recording technology and computer analysis have revealed that distinct hoo calls are made in response to specific events, such as foraging and encountering neighbours, and that subtle differences even distinguish between different predators when used as a warning. Lead author Esther Clarke said: "These animals are extraordinarily vocal creatures and give us the rare opportunity to study the evolution of complex vocal communication in a non-human primate. Home Features Why Wilson and Edwards need more focus in Greys Anatomy season 11 With Greys Anatomy heading back to season 1 this week, its time we look at our new favorite doctors in season 11 Wilson and Edwards. Up until last season, Meredith and Cristina were the doctors whose friendship ruled Greys Anatomy. There was never a question of whether Meredith or Cristina would turn to another person in a time of crisis. They were there for each other and for the audience for 11 seasons. Now that Cristina Yang is not longer in the picture, Meredith has floundered a bit in the friend department. The only remaining resident from her program is Alex and he is a bit hesitant to take the role of her person. If we weed through all the nostalgia for time lost on Greys Anatomy, there is a promising future for the show. Grey Sloan Memorial went through many changes, including renaming, merging, and ultimately offering attending positions to its first batch of season one interns. And can you guess which Grey Sloan doctor the storyline will involve? According to Entertainment Weekly, surgical resident Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton) will find herself in the middle of the plot when the anticipated plane crash episode airs on April 16. PHILADELPHIA -- The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is honoring Owen N. Witte, MD, founding director of the Eli & Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine & Stem Cell Research and distinguished professor of microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics at the University of California, Los Angeles, with the 55th annual AACR G.H.A. Clowes Memorial Award at the AACR Annual Meeting 2015, to be held in Philadelphia, April 18-22. Witte, who is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and an elected fellow of the AACR Academy, is being recognized for his many contributions to the understanding of human leukemias, immune disorders, and epithelial cancer stem cells. Witte's work, which contributed to the development of several approved targeted therapies, has transformed the lives of patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive leukemias and B-cell malignancies. He will present his lecture, "Finding Therapeutic Targets for Aggressive Prostate Cancer," Monday, April 20, 5:30 p.m. ET, in the Grand Ballroom of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
