New Genetic Clues Emerge on Origin of Hirschsprung’s Disease

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Genetic studies in humans, zebrafish and mice have revealed how two different types of genetic variations team up to cause a rare condition called Hirschsprungs disease. The findings add to an increasingly clear picture of how flaws in early nerve development lead to poor colon function, which must often be surgically corrected. The study also provides a window into normal nerve development and the genes that direct it. The results appear in the April 2 issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics. About one in every 5,000 babies is born with Hirschsprungs disease, which causes bowel obstruction and can be fatal if not treated. The disease arises early in development when nerves that should control the colon fail to grow properly. Those nerves are part of the enteric nervous system, which is separate from the central nervous system that enables our brains to sense the world. The genetic causes of Hirschsprungs disease are complex, making it an interesting case study for researchers like Aravinda Chakravarti, Ph.D., a professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicines McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine. His research group took on the condition in 1990, and … Continue reading

DNA vaccine hunters aim to cure cancer

In 2007, VGX acquired Advisys for a combination of cash and equity. Luckily, Dr. Kim had been on a fundraising tear for the previous seven years, raising more than $40 million from a wide array of investors, including Japan's Softbank, Korea Development Bank, the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense. "We learned how to be very creative in utilizing our financial resources, saving cash and so on," he said. "So the Advisys acquisition was straightforward." Two years later, VGX acquired Inovio, which allowed it to effectively corner the market on electroporation patents. "What Inovio had was the breadth and depth of patent portfolio of the delivery system," Dr. Kim said. Upon completion of the merger in 2011, VGX changed its name to Inovio Pharmaceuticals. Today, Inovio vaccines for treating breast, lung, pancreatic cancer and Hepatitis C are in Phase I clinical testing, and next year its cervical cancer vaccine will begin phase III testing, the final step to FDA approval. And those are just the lead products. Inovio has a vaccine in the works for nearly every disease that hasn't been eradicated by traditional vaccines. DNA tests confirm venomous jellyfish washed up on N.J. beach, report says

Montclair State University scientists have confirmed the jellyfish that washed up on the Jersey Shorelast year were venomous and dangerous sea creatures, reports say. Through DNA testing, scientists have identified the beached crittersas box jellyfish, the Asbury Park Press is reporting, which won't put swimmers in the hospital but aremore dangerous than the average jellyfish at the shore. Experts hope the rare sighting of the species stays rarein New Jersey, according to the report. The analysis showed a 93 to 94 percent match with genus Tamoya -- a jellyfish thatgenerally live in warm coastal waters with venom in its tentacles. DNA testing for dog poop on the rise in the U.S.

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

SEATTLE (AP) - Frustrated with dog owners who refuse to clean up after their pets, an increasing number of apartments in Seattle are opting to use DNA testing to identify the culprits. The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/1HxGgb2) that a company called BioPet Vet Lab from Knoxville, Tennessee, is providing its PooPrints testing kits to 26 apartment and condo complexes and homeowners associations in the region. Erin Atkinson, property manager at Potala Village Apartments in Everett says the messes are all over. "There was poop inside the elevators, in the carpeted hallways, up on the roof," Atkinson said. "They're lazy, I guess." That's why, since February 2014, tenants have been paying a "one-time fee of $29.95 for DNA testing." BioPet says in the past five years, the DNA test has been used in nearly 1,000 places around the country, and it's especially popular in Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles and other large cities. The marketing took a little longer to reach the Northwest, but King-Snohomish-Pierce counties are opportune sites. They are home to about 811,000 dogs. Seattle has 50 percent more dogs than kids, the Times said. One study said the average dog poop weighs one-third of a pound and the dogs … Continue reading
