VIDEO: Could modern chemistry make Valyrian steel?

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

April 6, 2015 Credit: American Chemical Society/YouTube Brett Smith for redOrbit.com @ParkstBrett With the fifth season of the fantasy epic Game of Thrones is set to begin next Sunday on HBO, the American Chemical Society recently asked the question: Could modern chemistry be used to make the epics legendary Valyrian steel swords? The magical metal is said to be crafted from dragons fire and ancient magic, but what if you dont have access to either? In an online video, the ACS Ryan Consell first broke down the characteristics of Valyrian steel based on its description in the show and the George R.R. Martin books on which the show is based. This super-material is described as being incredibly sharp, light, strong, super-heat resistant and dark in color with very distinct ripple patterns, Consell said. Strength and sharpness is gonna require a bit of a fancy balancing act. Perhaps a modern supermaterial Consell went on to say that to hold an edge, metal needs to be very hard. However, the harder a metal is the more brittle it becomes. For these reasons, I might recommend a spring steel, he said, maybe something with 0.6 percent carbon, and a couple percent silicon and … Continue reading

The most sought-after blades in Westeros are made from Valyrian steel, forged using ancient magic. But could you make your own Valyrian steel sword using real-life chemistry? Reactions collaborated with cosplaying chemistry fanatic and material scientist Ryan Consell to see if we could blend metallurgy with Westerosi magic. Mother critical of State Examinations Commission policy after son misses out

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

The State Examinations Commission does not round up percentages achieved in the Leaving Cert. Photograph: Bryan OBrien sharply criticised what she calls the injustices of the Leaving Cert system after her son missed out on his dream third-level course by a quarter of a percentage point. Last August Leaving Cert student Frankie Martyn missed out on securing a course in biomedical science at NUIG after being denied an A1 in biology despite being only one quarter of a percentage point off 90 per cent. The student remained on 89.75 per cent in biology due to a State Examinations Commission (SEC) policy of not rounding up percentages in the Leaving Cert. This resulted in him securing 535 points instead of the 540 required to enter the biomedical science course. A student at St Josephs in Spanish Point, Frankie achieved three A2s in the science subjects of biology, physics and chemistry, along with an A1 in English. His mother Carmel said yesterday: Frankie is very academic and worked very hard to achieve his dream. However, because of a system which was brought in in 1969, he was denied his chance. If a student gets 89.75 per cent on a paper, clearly it … Continue reading

Stem Cells for Paralysis: First of Its Kind Study

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

SAN DIEGO. (Ivanhoe Newswire) -- According to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, nearly one in 50 people is living with paralysis. Until now, there wasn't much hope. But a new study involving stem cells has doctors and patients excited. Two years ago, Brenda Guerra's life changed forever. Guerra told Ivanhoe, They told me that I went into a ditch and was ejected out of the vehicle. The accident left the 26-year-old paralyzed from the waist down, and confined to a wheelchair. I don't feel any of my lower body at all she said. Guerra has traveled from Kansas to UC San Diego to be the first patient to participate in a ground-breaking safety trial, testing stem cells for paralysis. Joseph D. Ciacci, MD, Professor of Neurosurgery at UC San Diego told Ivanhoe, We are directly injecting the stem cells into the spine. The stem cells come from fetal spinal cords. The idea is when they're transplanted they will develop into new neurons and bridge the gap created by the injury by replacing severed or lost nerve connections. They did that in animals and doctors are hoping for similar results in humans. The ultimate goal is to help people like … Continue reading
