Autism can be avoided and treated with vitamin D, doctor says

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

John Hopton for redOrbit.com @Johnfinitum Autism is an affliction that worries all parents-to-be, and an increasingly large number of children are developing the disorder (currently one in every 68 American newborns). But a high profile doctor believes that we can have a massive impact on the problem simply by making sure that mothers and young children get enough vitamin D. Doctor John J Cannell MD is about to release a book entitled Autism Causes, Prevention and Treatment: Vitamin D Deficiency and the Explosive Rise of Autism Spectrum Disorder in which he uses decades of research to demonstrate a link between vitamin D deficiency and autism. He spoke to redOrbit about how pregnant women can obtain safe levels of vitamin D through supplementation and sunlight, and how sun exposure is not the evil it is currently portrayed to be. Just within the last several weeks there was a ground-breaking study published in which they tested about a hundred families who had one child with autism and at least one child without, Dr. Cannell told us. They went back and got blood from when they were born, and found that the child with autism had much lower vitamin D levels than did … Continue reading

Carroll Co. Hospital Designated As Primary Stroke Center

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

April 4, 2015 9:42 PM WESTMINSTER Md. (WJZ)The Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems have designated Carroll Hospital Center as a Primary Stroke Center. The designation recognizes the hospital for its ability to provide timely, coordinated strokecare and for meeting and/or exceeding the states requirements for effectively diagnosing and treating stroke patients. Every minute during an ischemic stroke, millions of brain cells die. As a Primary Stroke Center, since patients with acute stroke symptoms will be brought to our hospital by EMS, we can now treat patients in our community faster and thereby potentially reduce disability in those stroke patients eligible for treatment, said Sandra Ruby, M.D., neurologist and medical director of Carroll Hospital Centers stroke program. To receive the designation, the Carroll County hospitalunderwent a rigorous examination in which MIEMSS surveyors evaluated the hospitals processes, treatment plans and outcomes for stroke patients. The hospital was found to have met or exceeded the states guidelines. For more information on Carroll Hospital Centers stroke and cardiovascular care CLICK HERE. More People Dying of Heart Disease, Stroke Worldwide: Study

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

By Randy Dotinga HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, April 2, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Despite medical advances, a new study shows that more people are dying of heart disease and stroke worldwide than did a quarter century ago because the global population is growing, and growing older. The good news is that the death rate -- the number of deaths in relation to the size of the population -- fell in most regions of the world. The declining death rate reflects better diets, less tobacco smoking and improvements in medicine, said Dr. Simon Capewell, a professor of clinical epidemiology at the University of Liverpool in England. However, the numbers are still too high, said Capewell, who was not involved in the study. "A lot of these deaths are premature, meaning they kill people below the age of 75," Capewell said. "Ninety percent of these premature deaths are preventable and avoidable through healthy diets and zero smoking." In the study, researchers led by Dr. Gregory Roth, from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington in Seattle, examined data from a 2013 global analysis of disease statistics from 188 countries. They focused on the numbers of cardiac deaths and … Continue reading

Stem cell implant shows promise for Parkinson's treatment

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

NEW YORK: An implant of stem cells treated with an anti-cancer drug has been found to be effective against Parkinson's symptoms in mice. The findings published in the journal Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience could be an important step toward using the implantation of stem cell-generated neurons as a treatment for Parkinson's disease in humans. Using a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved anti-cancer drug, the researchers were able to grow dopamine-producing neurons derived from embryonic stem cells that remained healthy and functional for as long as 15 months after implantation into mice, restoring motor function without forming tumours. "This simple strategy of shortly exposing pluripotent stem cells to an anti-cancer drug turned the transplant safer, by eliminating the risk of tumour formation", said the leader of the study Stevens Rehen, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in Brazil. Parkinson's, which affects as many as 10 million people in the world, is caused by a depletion of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. Several studies have indicated that the transplantation of embryonic stem cells improves motor functions in animal models. However, until now, the procedure was shown to be unsafe because of the risk of tumours upon transplantation. … Continue reading

D.C. Mother Pleads Guilty To Assaulting Her Child With Cerebral Palsy

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

Crime By Arthur Kogan, Fri, April 3, 2015 A young Washington D.C. mother has pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault and armed child cruelty against her 9-year-old son who is suffering from cerebral palsy. Betty Threat, 27, admitted to the torturing, imprisoning and starving her child. This treatment reportedly occurred inside her apartment in June 2014. According to WUSA9, Threat and her boyfriend, Lester Jackson, poured scalding hot water on her disabled son, taped his arms and legs with duct tape, left him locked in the bathroom or bedroom for days on end and withheld food for months. The boy was found by his father, Taurus Bullock, who then rushed him to the Childrens National Medical Center. The doctors and staff at the hospital identified a total of 60 injuries and learned that the child had been locked in a bedroom for three months while being tortured by his mother and her then-boyfriend. According to Crime Feed, Threat told police that she punished her child because she was embarrassed of his disability and blamed him for a miscarriage as well. After pleading guilty to the counts on Monday, Threat also told police of her own upbringing as a … Continue reading

Brain Game

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

COLUMBUS Jackson Kumpf admits he was timid when he stepped back onto the basketball court. The Scotus Central Catholic junior had been out of the game for about three weeks after suffering a hit to the head in a game against the Grand Island Central Catholic Crusaders. During that Centennial Conference Tournament game Jan. 27, a post player for the Crusaders came down with the ball and struck Kumpf in the back of his head. The hit knocked out the 17-year-old and left a gash in his head that required him to get seven staples after he went to the emergency room. The visible injury wasnt what kept Kumpf off the court until his return Feb. 19. It was the resulting concussion he suffered from the blow that left him on the sideline. Gone are the days when student-athletes could just shake off a head injury and get back in the game. Concussions, which are traumatic brain injuries caused by the brain being shaken in the skull, are taken seriously, from the professional level to children's sports. At the forefront is the health of the player, which is why the Nebraska Concussion Awareness Act was put into effect in 2012 … Continue reading

Is a loophole in stem cell law helping new therapy to thrive, or allowing dubious science?

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2015

Life-changing results: Sandra Sharman is a private stem cell patient. Photo: Meredith O'Shea Last week, Suzie Palmer, 44, travelled from her home in NSW to the Gold Coast for her second round of stem cell treatments for multiple sclerosis. OnTuesday morning, the wheelchair-bound poet underwent liposuction. By 2.30pm, stem cells had been partially separated from her abdominal fat, suspended in plasma, and injected intravenously. Her doctor, Soraya Felix, is a cosmetic surgeon and molecular biologist with a sideline in regenerative medicine. Palmer, a relentlessly upbeat and positive person, says the treatments have helped her cope better with heat, improved her mobility and flexibility and otherwise made her "feel like a normal human being". She has, she says, managed a few steps with a walker, still a long way from "running about, which is my dream". Poster girl: Suzie Palmer is undergoing stem cell therapy for MS. Photo: Edwina Pickles The rapidly growing stem cell industry is aglow with similarly positive testimonials, notably on behalf of practitioners who offer little documented scientific evidence of their success.
