Multiple sclerosis can be scary, but a new treatment holds promise

Posted: Published on April 2nd, 2015

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a scary and unpredictable disease. A patient's own immune system attacks the nervous system; causing numbness, dizziness and in some cases paralysis. "It was terrifying, said Rachel Taylor. It was like having a wet, heavy blanket put over your life." Taylor was diagnosed with MS 14 years ago. "I was an active runner, and over the course of a few months couldn't figure out why I couldn't keep up," said Rachel. Rachel knew what was wrong; she'd been working with the MS Society bike rides for years. Rachel's in remission now, but she is still thrilled with Prof. Tom Lane's stem cell discovery. "We have animals that are paralyzed that cannot right themselves, and once we en-graft the neural stem cells into the spinal cords, within three weeks, the majority of the animals, about 80 to 85 percent, will regain motor skills," said Prof. Tom Lane, PhD, a professor of Pathology at the University of Utah. Researchers say MS damages the myelin, a layer around nerve cells. Once injected, the human neural stem cells stimulate the mouse's own cells to repair the damage. When nerve cell function returns, the mice can walk and run again. Continue … Continue reading

Genetically Engineered Babies. Germ Line Engineering with …

Posted: Published on April 1st, 2015

If anyone had devised a way to create a genetically engineered baby, I figured George Church would know about it. At his labyrinthine laboratory on the Harvard Medical School campus, you can find researchers giving E. Coli a novel genetic code never seen in nature. Around another bend, others are carrying out a plan to use DNA engineering to resurrect the woolly mammoth. His lab, Church likes to say, is the center of a new technological genesisone in which man rebuilds creation to suit himself. When I visited the lab last June, Church proposed that I speak to a young postdoctoral scientist named Luhan Yang, a Harvard recruit from Beijing whod been a key player in developing a new, powerful technology for editing DNA, called CRISPR-Cas9. With Church, Yang had founded a small company to engineer the genomes of pigs and cattle, sliding in beneficial genes and editing away bad ones. As I listened to Yang, I waited for a chance to ask my real questions: Can any of this be done to human beings? Can we improve the human gene pool? The position of much of mainstream science has been that such meddling would be unsafe, irresponsible, and even … Continue reading

Cancer-fighting pink pineapples? Genetic engineering looms

Posted: Published on April 1st, 2015

Unidentifiable shopping trolley - Source: Breakfast Cancer-fighting pink pineapples, heart-healthy purple tomatoes and less fatty vegetable oils may someday be on grocery shelves alongside more traditional products. These genetically engineered foods could receive government approval in the coming years, following the OK given recently in the US to apples that don't brown and potatoes that don't bruise. The companies and scientists that have created these foods are hoping that customers will be attracted to the health benefits and convenience and overlook any concerns about genetic engineering. "I think once people see more of the benefits they will become more accepting of the technology," says Michael Firko, who oversees the US Agriculture Department's regulation of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. Critics aren't so sure. They say there should be more thorough regulation of modified foods, which are grown from seeds engineered in labs, and have called for mandatory labeling of those foods. The Agriculture Department only has the authority to oversee plant health of GMOs, and seeking Food and Drug Administration's safety approval is generally voluntary. "Many of these things can be done through traditional breeding," says Doug Gurian-Sherman of the advocacy group Center for Food Safety. "There needs to be … Continue reading

Complete camel skeleton unearthed in Austria

Posted: Published on April 1st, 2015

IMAGE:The camel skeleton was unearthed near the river Danube in Lower Austria, Tulln. view more In 2006 construction began on a new shopping centre in Tulln. The works unearthed various archaeologically valuable objects that were salvaged during rescue excavations. Among these objects was also the complete skeleton of a large mammal. Large mammal uncovered during excavations in Tulln "The partly excavated skeleton was at first suspected to be a large horse or cattle," says archaeozoologist Alfred Galik from the Institute for Anatomy, Histology and Embryology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. "But one look at the cervical vertebrae, the lower jaw and the metacarpal bones immediately revealed that this was a camel." Camel bones have been found in Europe dating back to the Roman period. Isolated bones or partly preserved skeletons are known from Mauerbach near Vienna as well as from Serbia and Belgium. But a complete camel skeleton is unique for Central Europe. "Exotic animal" died in Tulln In addition to horses, the Ottoman army also used camels for transportation and as riding animals. In cases of scarcity, the soldiers also ate the animal's flesh. But the skeleton found in Tulln was complete. "This means that the animal … Continue reading
