Extraordinary Life: Biology Teacher, And Friend To Struggling Students

Posted: Published on March 30th, 2015

For Jane Bergeron, life was all about helping others, whether it involved dissecting fetal pigs, encouraging a student struggling with adolescent angst or negotiating better treatment for patients in a nursing home. She was a direct, no-nonsense biology teacher and a loyal friend who loved bawdy Shakespearean jokes. For nearly 40 years, she was a beloved and respected biology teacher at Hall High School in West Hartford. Jane McCorkle Bergeron, 77, died Feb. 19. She had lived with her husband, Robert Bergeron Jr., in the Pleasant Valley section of Barkhamsted. Jane was born on Sept. 15, 1937 in Philadelphia to Ralph and Mildred McCorkle, but her parents divorced when she was young, and she moved to Tom's River, N.J., where her mother taught Latin. She was interested in science, loved horses and excelled at sports. Of the five girls in her close circle of friends, she was the most adventurous, said Faith Roberts, a classmate as well as smart: Bergeron was ranked fourth in her class academically. She went to Springfield College, prepared to be a physical education teacher, and taught PE for several years. But she had injured her back baling hay, and later damaged her knee while skiing, … Continue reading

Survey of Salmonella Species in Staten Island Zoo’s Snakes

Posted: Published on March 30th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Boston (March 29, 2015) For humans, Salmonella is always bad news. The bacterial pathogen causes paratyphoid fever, gastroenteritis and typhoid. But for snakes, the bacteria arent always bad news. Certain species of Salmonella are a natural part of the snake microbial collective. However, the occasional species can cause a disease. Reptile handlers would love to know when they have a potentially problematic pathogen lurking in the midst of their snakes. To better understand the variety of Salmonella species harbored by captive reptiles, Staten Island Zoo has teamed up with the microbiology department at Wagner College. Eden Stark, a graduate student on the project, her advisor, Christopher Corbo, and the zoos curator and head veterinarian Marc Valitutto want to know how many Salmonella species live among the Staten Island Zoo rattlesnakes. The zoo has a long history of exhibiting one of the most comprehensive rattlesnake collections in the world, currently with 21 of 38 species on display. So far, Stark has surveyed 26 species of snakes. Few other institutions have undertaken such broad scale analysis of Salmonella in snakes, notes Valitutto. The research will be presented at the American Society for Biochemistry and … Continue reading

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OvaScienceSM (NASDAQ: OVAS), a global fertility company focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of new treatment options, announced today that additional clinical experience of the Companys AUGMENTSM treatment demonstrated improved pregnancy rates in women who had failed three to seven prior in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. These results were reported at the Society for Reproductive Investigation (SRI) 62nd Annual Scientific Meeting being held in San Francisco, CA. The AUGMENT treatment is not available in the United States. Kutluk Oktay, M.D., F.A.C.O.G, of Gen-art IVF in Ankara, Turkey, and one of the initial IVF specialists to use the AUGMENT treatment in clinical practice, presented initial clinical experience in eight women whose ages ranged between 27 and 41 years with three or more IVF failures and poor egg and embryo quality. In eight women who received the AUGMENT treatment, there were two clinical pregnancies out of eight embryo transfers (25%).1 Most notably, the two pregnancies occurred with single embryo transfers in women aged 34 and 41 who had previously failed to become pregnant following seven and three IVF cycles, respectively. One patient has an ongoing clinical pregnancy.2 These initial AUGMENT pregnancy rates are quite encouraging, especially given that these … Continue reading
