Biology Teacher, And Friend To Struggling Students

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2015

For Jane Bergeron, life was all about helping others, whether it involved dissecting fetal pigs, encouraging a student struggling with adolescent angst or negotiating better treatment for patients in a nursing home. She was a direct, no-nonsense biology teacher and a loyal friend who loved bawdy Shakespearean jokes. For nearly 40 years, she was a beloved and respected biology teacher at Hall High School in West Hartford. Jane McCorkle Bergeron, 77, died Feb. 19. She had lived with her husband, Robert Bergeron Jr., in the Pleasant Valley section of Barkhamsted. Jane was born on Sept. 15, 1937 in Philadelphia to Ralph and Mildred McCorkle, but her parents divorced when she was young, and she moved to Tom's River, N.J., where her mother taught Latin. She was interested in science, loved horses and excelled at sports. Of the five girls in her close circle of friends, she was the most adventurous, said Faith Roberts, a classmate as well as smart: Bergeron was ranked fourth in her class academically. She went to Springfield College, prepared to be a physical education teacher, and taught PE for several years. But she had injured her back baling hay, and later damaged her knee while skiing, … Continue reading

The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Texas at Arlington recently began welcoming incoming exemplary freshman to earn their Bachelor of Science degrees in Bioengineering. This new Undergraduate program is an exciting prospect for our department, adding to the Master and Doctoral degrees currently offered. Today, both graduate and undergraduate students as well as faculty in the Bioengineering Department enjoy an association with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UTSW), one of the top medical schools in the nation, located only 22 miles (35 minutes) away from the UTA campus. Students can take engineering and life science courses at UTA or UTSW; conducting research in laboratories located on either campus. Graduates of the program receive a diploma bearing the seals of both UTA and UTSW. Genetically-modified mosquitoes might save thousands of human lives, but is the risk too high?

Posted: Published on March 29th, 2015

In the unofficial mosquito capital of Canada, most people do whatever they can to avoid the clouds of biting, whining pests. Steve Whyard, on the other hand, is creating mosquitoes by the thousands. Inside his Winnipeg lab, the University of Manitoba biologist is soaking larvae of one of the insects most dangerous strains in a special solution to silence two of the bugs genes. The result is an army of sterile males with potential to infiltrate and decimate whole populations of mosquitoes. Thats good news for the battle against summer insects. And, more significantly, could finally give humans the upper hand on illnesses like malaria and dengue fever that kill hundreds of thousands annually. But the experiment also launches Canada into a controversial new field bioengineering mosquitoes that critics fear might also wreak havoc on humans. A British companys proposal to release millions of its genetically modified insects into a Florida Keys community in the near future has stirred up vocal opposition, with 150,000 people signing a petition to oppose the project. They are going to use my kids, my neighbours and my community as a guinea pig, says Mila de Mier, the Key West realtor who launched the petition. … Continue reading

Eczema: Its much more than dry skin

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2015

Q: I took my son to the doctor because he was constantly scratching his legs. The doctor says its eczema. Is that just a fancy word for dry skin? A: Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is more than dry skin. It is an allergic skin condition that can make a child miserable. Treatment can usually help control the condition and ease its symptoms. Eczema can look different in different children. It can be bumpy or scaly, with small or big patches. The amount of redness also varies. Dry, scaling skin usually occurs along with it. Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a report with the most up-to-date information and advice about eczema. They said that it is especially important to treat eczema in young children. They made some recommendations for treatment and for preventing possible complications such as skin infections. Take good care of the skin. Children with eczema should not bathe too often because this dries out the skin. Ask your sons doctor how often he should bathe. However often, the baths should be short and lukewarm, not hot. The soap should be mild, without perfume. The most important maintenance, though, is using an ointment-type moisturizer all over … Continue reading

Cannabis oil testing gives hope to parents of epileptic children

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2015

Updated: Saturday, March 28 2015, 11:18 PM EDT By: Bryant Maddrick HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A Central Pennsylvania hospital plans to test cannabis oil as a treatment for epilepsy. The first trial will get started in the next couple months. News that WellSpan Health would do the trail came as welcome news to parent Mark Knecht. "I've always said, it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when," Knecht. The announcement gave Knecht hope. His 12-year-old daughter Anna has a severe form of epilepsy that produces seizures. The issue of legalizing medical marijuana is underway in Pennsylvania. In Colorado, marijuana is already legal. Before WellSpans announcement, the Knecht family considered leaving its Mechanicsburg home to move to Colorado. "You're paying a mortgage here and rent out there and a lot of things that are not covered here would not be covered out there," Knecht said. "So it's a lot more out of pocket expenses for her care. Right now, she has nursing care here in Pennsylvania. We would not have nursing care right away out there. So yeah, the cost is significant both physically and financially." Numerous treatments for Anna have failed and her parents want to try cannabis … Continue reading

Mason Anderson, 4, who has cerebral palsy, undergoing expensive but revolutionary surgery

Posted: Published on March 28th, 2015

Mason Anderson is a happy, funny little guy with a smile that can melt your heart. The good-natured tots outgoing personality masks a tortuous four years that began Jan. 24, 2011 the day he was born. One of three triplets, Mason weighed less than three pounds and, like his sisters, Jaida and Whitney, he required ventilation to breathe and feeding tubes for nutrition. Three days into life, Mason suffered a brain hemorrhage that left the right side of his brain severely damaged. He developed hydrocephalus and required brain surgery twice. It would get worse before it would get better. When he was one, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). Every day, in my mind, over and over again, I replay what the doctor said after his brain surgery: He told me he would never walk, he would never talk hed never be able to smile, recalled a tearful Carlene Anderson. I didnt believe it. She and her husband, Kevin, and her father have refused to accept that diagnosis. They have been steadfast in their belief Mason would defy the odds. And their dedication and perseverance have paid off. Today, Mason talks, smiles, can walk with a walker, attends preschool … Continue reading
