Autism Tied to Higher Risk for Gut Troubles in Children

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

WEDNESDAY, March 25, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Children with autism tend to have more gastrointestinal problems early in life compared to other children, a new study finds. Researchers compared these GI symptoms -- such as diarrhea, constipation and food allergy/intolerance -- during the first three years of life among three groups of Norwegian children. One group included 195 children with autism, another included more than 4,600 children with developmental delays, and the third group included more than 40,000 children who developed typically. Compared to those with typical development, children with autism were more likely to have constipation and diarrhea when they were ages 6 months to 18 months, and more likely to have diarrhea, constipation and food allergy/intolerance when they were ages 18 months to 36 months, the researchers said. Children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) were more likely to have one or more GI symptoms in both age ranges, and more than twice as likely to have at least one GI symptom in both age ranges, compared to those with developmental delay or with typical development, the researchers said. The study was published online March 25 in the journal JAMA Psychiatry. "Even though GI symptoms are common in … Continue reading

Georgia House and Senate announce deal on autism bill

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

ATLANTA (AP) - An autism insurance bill considered dead earlier this week got a new lease on life Thursday when two key legislators from the House and Senate announced a compromise plan they hope will pass before the session ends next week. State Sen. Charlie Bethel, R-Dalton, and Rep. Richard Smith, R-Columbus, said in a joint news conference that they have agreed on a deal that will look a lot like a Senate measure that flew through the chamber in January. Smith, chairman of the House Insurance Committee, told lawmakers Wednesday that requiring businesses to offer autism insurance was bad policy and would not receive a floor vote this session. Bethel and Smith, who had been feuding publicly over autism insurance, said the language of Bethels bill, SB1, which requires health insurers to cover autism treatments for children up to age 6, will be combed with House Bill 429, a measure dealing with end-of-life insurance coverage for terminal patients. Under the deal, autism insurance would be capped at $30,000 a year, less than the $35,000 proposed in Bethels bill. The two announced that a 0.2 percent general sales tax would go to voters in 2016. Then, if approved, the age … Continue reading

Chris Bath: 'One in six will have one…'

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

SN BLOG Chris Bath: 'One in six will have one...' We started pursuing this story because there are thousands of Australian stroke survivors desperate to regain their independence. Theres a stroke in Australia every ten minutes. One in six of us will have one. Thats a lot of people left with often permanent disability - about half a million Australians so far and climbing. There is no treatment for stroke, apart from rehabilitation. And rehab is hard yakka. Even if you have the motivation and drive to do it after a stroke, access to it in Australia is extraordinarily difficult for tens of thousands of people. There are some great rehab practitioners out there, but most stroke survivors and their carers can attest that finding them, and then getting treated by them, is mission impossible. I know exactly how hard it is, because five years down the track from the stroke that nearly killed my father, Im still watching my parents frustrations with rehab availability. So imagine the interest among stroke survivors with news a simple injection could give them back some of what the stroke took away. An American clinic, the Institute of Neurological Recovery, has been injecting stroke … Continue reading

Neuropsychiatric Sequelae of Stroke: Issues and Implications for Clinicians

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

Many patients who have had a stroke experience neuropsychiatric sequelae, such as apathy, depression, anxiety, PTSD, irritability, pseudobulbar affect, impulsivity, mania, and psychosis (Table 1). Every year in the United States, almost 800,000 people have a stroke, which creates a large population at risk for post-stroke neuropsychiatric disorders. The prevalence of stroke in younger individuals is increasing, and it is likely that psychiatrists might encounter these disorders.1 Post-stroke neuropsychiatric disorders can follow either ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke; attempts to link specific psychiatric disorders with the type, mechanism, or location of stroke have not produced clear associations.2 This review focuses on post-stroke depression (PSD), apathy, anxiety, and PTSD, because these disorders occur and have been studied most frequently. Of these disorders, PSD remains the best-understood condition. Post-stroke neuropsychiatric disorders do not occur solely as an adjustment reaction to disability or increased awareness of ones mortalityrather, the direct neurophysiological effects of stroke can cause depression and other disorders. For example, older adults with asymptomatic ischemic white matter disease and no history of clinical stroke show higher rates of depression.3 Stroke and psychiatric disorders have a bidirectional relationship and may share common risk factorsnot only does stroke increase the risk of depression, anxiety, … Continue reading
