Grey's Anatomy: What Happened Between Derek and His Research Fellow?

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

Alright, Grey's Anatomy fans, after two weeks of wondering, let's cut to the chase: Did Derek (Patrick Dempsey) cheat on Meredith (Ellen Pompeo)? Ehh ... I guess it depends on your definition of cheating. Here's Derek's story (which, honestly, is too simple to be true): His research fellow was the one who picked up his phone. Who knows why?! And he left it at the lab when he was on his way to the airport, and thus couldn't answer Meredith's calls. He flew back to Seattle because he realized he and Meredith had some things to work on. But Meredith isn't buying it, thinking that Derek came back because he did something wrong and needed to fix it. After all, she was Derek's subordinate once upon a time, too. Pilot Inspector: We revisit Grey's Anatomy, 10 years later So then we start to get the real story. In a flashback, we meet Derek's research fellow, Renee (Scottie Thompson). And, as Meredith expected of the Other Woman, she is young and hot and has great hair (and great eyes, incidentally). There seems to be an instant spark between her and Derek the first time they're introduced, but maybe that's just the … Continue reading

On March 27, 2005, Grey's Anatomy premiered and everything changed. OK, maybe not everything. But Shonda Rhimes gave us a whole new language, one of TV's best couples (Meredith and Cristina, not MerDer) and revolutionized Post-Its as the ultimate symbol of romance. But when the pilot aired 10 years ago, was it possible to predict these lasting effects the interns of Seattle Grace Hospital would have on us? Joyce Eng, Sadie Gennis and Liz Raftery decided to find out. VIDEO: How well do the Grey's Anatomy stars know their medical jargon? "A Hard Day's Night" synopsis: On her first day of work, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) is horrified to discover her drunken hookup from the previous night, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), is her new boss at the hospital. Alas, this is one present Arizona doesnt necessarily want to accept. When Callie gives her the vase and its super duper ugly and she really doesnt want it, she doesnt want to reject the sentiment with which it was given, which was Callie coming forth and giving her something and taking care of her in some way, but at the same time, she really doesnt want the vase, so she tries to manipulate the situation to give it back … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy: When will Amelia and Owen take the next step?

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

While Meredith deals with Dereks sudden and suspiciously timed return to Seattle, another familiar face will pop back up on Greys Anatomy during Thursdays episode as Owens (Kevin McKidd) mother (Debra Mooney) checks into Grey Sloan Memorial. Its a really fun episode, McKidd tells EW. Its great having Debra Mooney back. We give her a lot more to do. She turns up with a medical condition, but the real surprise is that she has got a man in tow with her that Owen did not know about. Owens reaction is funny and interesting. Her arrival may put Owen in an uncomfortable position as hes forced to introduce Amelia to his mother much earlier than he wouldve liked. Owen and Amelia are not a couple yet, so its interesting to see how that plays out between them, McKidd says. Amelia and Owens mom actually hit it off very quickly. They like each other and become fast friends. Owen is the odd man out in the whole situation. Its cool for Amelia, Scorsone adds. She meets his mom and she likes her immediately. Shes just a great broad and Amelia really appreciates her sense of humor. Theyve got a lot of similarities … Continue reading

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

The truth has been revealed! In tonights episode of Greys Anatomy, fans of the hit ABC series finally learned the real reason Derek suspiciously fled from D.C. to Seattle. But hold on -- dont grab your pitchforks just yet! Theres more to this story than was initially revealed in the opening scene of episode 17. When With or Without You kicked off, Derek was sticking with the story that nothing had happened between him and his extremely smart (not to mention good-looking) employee. Following Dereks alleged confession of why he returned home (which he claimed was to save his crumbling marriage), Meredith decided to go to work to try and take her mind off her shady spouse. 'Grey's Anatomy' recap: 'With or Without You'

Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015

Greys Anatomy took its time answering the question on everyones mindDid Derek cheat on Meredith?tonight. We didnt get a definitive answer under the last few minutes of the episode. Despite how long it took to get there, Im fairly content with how it all landed, especially because it was an excuse to think about what Cristina said to Meredith before leaving last year.As Merediths opening monologue explains, tonights episode was all about our characters remembering that just because they have gone so long withoutsomething doesnt mean they no longer need it. This thematic throughline ran all the way from MerDers situation to Stephanie, who, along with Wilson, was stuck in comedic relief land tonight. Lets talk about why a woman answered Dereks phone because thats what Derek and Meredith are discussing when the episode opens. According to Derek, his research fellowRenee (NCIS Scottie Thompson), who he insists is justhis research fellow, answered his phone because he left it in the lab and was already at the airport. He realized he left his phone when he got to the airport, so he called it and found out about Renees chat with Meredith. Derek tries to convince Meredith that he came home to work … Continue reading

AmnioChor is innovating perinatal stem cell technology and the banking industry

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

Biotech company AmnioChor is bringing new life to perinatal stem cell technology and an alternative to the cord blood banking industry. Currently, parents have an option to allow cord blood to be stored in a public bank, which could be used for research or unrelated transplants. Alternatively, they can pay to have cells stored in a family bank, which will allow them personal access. What makes AmnioChors technology different is the process of freezing a whole piece of the amnion placental tissue, which contains the Mesenchymal and Epithelial stem cells. This approach would provide many more opportunities to use the cells, and these cells have unique qualities that differentiate them from cord blood. Cord blood technology separates and processes the cells, so the use is more limited. AmnioChor will store samples as if they were in a blood bank essentially (theirs is called Omnibank). Parents can choose to store placental tissue there for future personal use, and samples that come from donations will be stored as well. The company hopes to close a $300,000 seed round in the next six months to develop the concept, CEO Russ Schweizer said. AmnioChor is part of Chicagos MATTER healthcare incubator. Its product is … Continue reading

Stem cells may improve tendon healing, reduce retear risk in rotator cuff surgery

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

An injection of a patient's bone marrow stem cells during rotator cuff surgery significantly improved healing and tendon durability, according to a study presented today at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Each year in the U.S., more than 2 million people have rotator cuff surgery to re-attach their shoulder tendon to the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). Rotator cuff tears can occur during a fall or when lifting an extremely heavy object; however, most tears are the result of aging and overuse. The French study, of which a portion appeared in the September 2014 issue of International Orthopaedics, included 90 patients who underwent rotator cuff surgery. Researchers tried to make the two groups as equivalent as possible based on rotator cuff tear size, tendon rupture location, dominate shoulder, gender and age. Forty-five of the patients received injections of bone marrow concentrate (BMC) mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) at the surgical site, and 45 had their rotator cuff repaired or reattached without MSCs. Patient ultrasound images were obtained each month following surgery for 24 months. In addition, MRI images were obtained of patient shoulders at three and six months following surgery, and at … Continue reading
