Stem cells may significantly improve tendon healing, reduce retear risk in rotator cuff surgery

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

LAS VEGAS, March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- An injection of a patient's bone marrow stem cells during rotator cuff surgery significantly improved healing and tendon durability, according to a study presented today at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Each year in the U.S., more than 2 million people have rotator cuff surgery to re-attach their shoulder tendon to the head of the humerus (upper arm bone). Rotator cuff tears can occur during a fall or when lifting an extremely heavy object; however, most tears are the result of aging and overuse. The French study, of which a portion appeared in the September 2014 issue of International Orthopaedics, included 90 patients who underwent rotator cuff surgery. Researchers tried to make the two groups as equivalent as possible based on rotator cuff tear size, tendon rupture location, dominate shoulder, gender and age. Forty-five of the patients received injections of bone marrow concentrate (BMC) mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) at the surgical site, and 45 had their rotator cuff repaired or reattached without MSCs. Patient ultrasound images were obtained each month following surgery for 24 months. In addition, MRI images were obtained of patient shoulders at three … Continue reading

Woman With Severe Eczema Shares Her At-Home Treatment Secret

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

Health By Lisa Fogarty, Wed, March 25, 2015 Sufferers of eczema know how uncomfortable and embarrassing the itchy and painful skin condition can be -- and how few treatments are effective. A 25-year-old British woman says she has discovered the miracle cure for her skin condition and it only costs three dollars. Instead of shelling out big bucks for prescription creams, Amy-Louise James says she uses Quaker Oats and that the results of her at-home treatment have been dramatic, reports the Daily Mail. James says she has suffered from eczema since she was 3 years old and that the condition causes her skin to become red and so itchy and dry that she often has to apologize to strangers for flakes of her skin that fall to the ground. She also says her wounds bleed and that she has to change her bed sheets daily because there is often blood on her sheets. The eczema was prominent both on her body and her neck and face. But things started looking up when James says she discovered the best treatment for her eczema was sitting on a shelf at her local grocery store. "I'd use light treatment, different creams, medication, herbal … Continue reading

Protein can help diagnose muscular dystrophy

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

Muscular dystrophy only affects young males and is the most common inherited neuro-muscular condition here, affecting one in 3,500 boys Researchers in Dublin and Bonn have made an important discovery related to muscular dystrophy, a relatively common inherited degenerative disorder. The finding could make it possible to diagnose the condition much earlier, and may also point a way towards new treatment options. Muscular dystrophy only affects young males and is the most common inherited neuro-muscular condition here, affecting one in 3,500 boys. Muscle function gradually declines and sufferers have an average life expectancy of just 20 years. Research led by the University of Maynooth with colleagues from the University of Bonn and Dublin City University decided to carry out a detailed study of what was going on inside the muscle cells of those with the condition, said Prof Kay Ohlendieck, chair of Maynooths department of biology. We looked at 1,000 different proteins, comparing those from a healthy cell with those from a diseased cell, looking for any differences between them, he said. The disease interferes with a protein that helps muscle cells to be elastic, which in turn causes a buildup in the cells of a structural protein called collagen. … Continue reading

MDA to Offer Genetic Testing for Limb-girdle Muscular Dystrophy

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

CHICAGO, March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Muscular Dystrophy Association announced today that thanks to a grant from Genzyme, a Sanofi company, and in collaboration with Emory Genetics Laboratory, MDA clinics are now offering genetic testing for people experiencing muscle weakness suggesting limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD) who do not already have a genetic diagnosis. This advancement in diagnosis will help more people living with LGMD, and their clinicians, find the most accurate treatment path available. "LGMD is a disorder with more than 30 genetic subtypes. What all the subtypes have in common is weakness of the 'limb-girdle' muscles the muscles surrounding the shoulders and hips," said Valerie A. Cwik, MDA Executive Vice President and Chief Medical and Scientific Officer. "This test will allow clinicians to diagnose and treat individuals with more accuracy as some subtypes require different forms of intervention because they are much more likely than others to involve the cardiac or respiratory muscles." Additionally, weakness of the proximal muscles that appears to be associated with LGMD can occasionally be caused by a metabolic muscle disorder known as Pompe disease, for which enzyme replacement therapy is available. This test will help to accurately diagnose Pompe disease and point patients … Continue reading

Over two million suffer from epilepsy in Pakistan – Pakistan – DAWN.COM

Posted: Published on March 26th, 2015

KARACHI: Over two million Pakistanis suffer from epilepsy that is around five per cent of the world population of epilepsy patients, according to health experts. Epilepsy is treatable but lack of awareness and unavailability of qualified neurologists are key factors forcing a vast majority of patients to live without the required treatment, said Dr Naila Shahbaz while addressing a press conference on Wednesday. The event was organised at the Karachi Press Club by the Pakistan Society of Neurology (PSN) and Neurology Awareness and Research Foundation (NARF) as part of awareness programmes on World Purple Day being observed across the world on Thursday. Dr Shahbaz said that of the 50 million people suffering from epilepsy across the world, nearly 2.5 million resided in Pakistan. In our society there is a common belief that epilepsy is not a disease but a supernatural phenomenon triggered by demons or jinns. This only benefits quacks and fake healers, she said. Dr Abdul Malik said the PSN and NARF had started a two-tier drive with the support of colleagues elsewhere in the world as despite being developed countries the stigma still remains widespread even in the United States and the United Kingdom. He said the incidence of … Continue reading
