Woman covered in severe eczema which caused 'snowstorm' when she walked cured by PORRIDGE

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2015

An eczema sufferer whose painful condition covered her entire body causing a "snowstorm" of flaky skin when she walked has found a surprise cure in the cereal aisle. Amy-Louise James, 25, had such severe eczema she had to change her bed sheets every day because of her weeping wounds and excess skin shedding. The 25-year-old spent years slathering her sore skin in steroid creams but they had little effect and over time her condition actually seemed to get worse. But Amy-Louise found a successful treatment for her eczema in Quakers oats bought from Tesco for 1.99. She said spreading porridge over her body has made her skin fresher and she is healthier than she has been in years. Amy-Louise, a controller for a recovery firm, said: People dont realise how serious eczema is, they think its just red skin thats a bit itchy. I had to change my bed every day because there would be so much skin and my eczema wept so much the sheets got all sticky. I itched constantly. There would be blood on the sheets too. It was just permanently painful. Amy-Louise, from Northampton, would scratch so much, flakes of skin fell from her body. Read … Continue reading

A call for more research on brain damage in American football

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2015

More research is needed to identify how athletes sustain brain injury from American football, and also to develop strategies to protect them, write experts in The BMJ today. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive neurodegenerative syndrome that can affect athletes. It is thought to result from concussion and brain injury following repeated blows to the head. But the topic of brain damage in football is controversial. The National Football League, for example, does not acknowledge any association between football and brain injury. CTE symptoms include memory problems, depression, poor impulse and motor control, anger and apathy. But diagnosis can be confirmed only with an autopsy. Over the course of the last 60 years, just 63 cases of CTE have been identified. When compared to the millions of football players, this number is very low, explain the authors, and this makes research "challenging" as definitive conclusions are difficult to make based on small samples. Consequently, it will take time and further research to make American football safer, but it must remain a top priority, they argue. All cases of confirmed CTE following autopsy suggest that the condition is linked to repetitive blows to the head. But not all of these … Continue reading

Marketing, prescribing testosterone and growth hormone for aging is disease mongering

Posted: Published on March 25th, 2015

(Boston) - The marketing, prescribing and selling of testosterone and growth hormone as panaceas for aging-associated problems is disease mongering. So assert Thomas Perls, MD, MPH, FACP, a geriatrician at Boston Medical Center and professor of Geriatrics and Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine; and David Handelsman, MB BS, FRACP, PhD, professor of Reproductive Endocrinology and Andrology, director of the ANZAC Research Institute, University of Sydney and Andrology Department, Concord Hospital. Their editorial is published in this month's Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Disease mongering is inventing new broader definitions of disease in conjunction with widespread marketing to increase sales of specific drugs and therapies. "The mass marketing of testosterone by direct-to-consumer advertising coupled with lax professional society guidelines have encouraged the disease mongering of testosterone prescribing for contrived indications, that is, common features of aging rather than disorders of the reproductive system that prevent testosterone production and therefore warrant replacement therapy," said Handelsman. "Marketing campaigns such as 'low T' contributed to a more than 10-fold increase in U.S. testosterone prescribing between 2000 and 2011. The epidemic of testosterone prescribing over the last decade has been primarily pushing testosterone as a tonic for sexual dysfunction and/or reduced energy … Continue reading

Donor drive events to take place across Merseyside to help Finn McEwen

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2015

A series of bone marrow registration drives have been planned across Merseyside to help Litherland boy Finn McEwen. Finn, 7, suffers from bone marrow failure and needs a stem cell transplant to save his life. Three events are planned during this week to help as many people as possible to sign up to the register to help find him a match. The first, tomorrow morning, will take place at Liverpool John Moores Universitys School of Art and Designs Art and Design Academy on Duckinfield Street between 10.30am and 2.30pm. On Thursday an event at the 1878 Lounge at Everton Football Club will run from 12 noon until 7pm, and on Friday an event at Finns school, English Martyrs Catholic Primary School in Litherland, will run between 10am and 6pm. Finns mum Carole said that they were looking for the best possible match for Finn so a transplant would have the best chance of success. Finn McEwen (left) and his brother Lucas (right) chat to Everton star James MCarthy (centre) at Finch Farm She said: Hes really happy to get involved with the bone marrow drive events and he understands the importance both for himself and other people. He says we … Continue reading

Asymmetrex Opens Up 5th World Congress on Cell and Stem Cell Research in Chicago with a Focus on Its New Technologies …

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2015

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 24, 2015 The opening keynote address presented by Asymmetrex, LLC to an assembled audience of about 100 international experts in stem cell science, medicine, and engineering challenged attendees to consider whether the past 10 years of rapid growth of heterologous stem cell transplantation trials was the best path to achieving effective regenerative medicines. Among the participants there were a number of clinical and industry experts who pursued heterologous stem cell treatments. To a large extent, heterologous stem cell transplantation treatments involve evaluating bone marrow-derived or fat-derived cells as possible therapies for illnesses and disorders in other organs and tissues. Sherley suggested that such clinical trials were motivated primarily by the easier access and greater availability of these types of cell preparations instead of good biological rationale. This intentional provocation got the conference off to energetic discussion that continued throughout the day. As the co-chair of the conferences first-days focus on stem cell medical engineering, Sherley shared with attendees Asymmetrexs essential technological basis, which is the asymmetric self-renewal of adult tissue stem cells. Sherley related how all Asymmetrexs innovative technologies for advancing stem cell medicine were derivative of the companys superior research position on asymmetric self-renewal, which … Continue reading

Stem cell therapy could reverse Type 2 diabetes, UBC study finds

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2015

VANCOUVER -- University of B.C. scientists appear to be one step closer to reversing diabetes using stem cell therapy. The latest study, published last week in the journal Stem Cell Reports, found that Type 2 diabetes can be eliminated in mice using a combination of conventional diabetes drugs and specially cultured stem cells. Similar methods have already been used to reverse Type 1 diabetes, which usually begins in childhood. The team simulated Type 2 diabetes in mice by feeding them a high-fat, high-calorie diet for several weeks. In humans, Type 2 usually begins in adulthood and can be a result of obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise. Like diabetic humans, the diabetic mice treated only with drugs experienced spikes in their blood sugar levels after eating sugary meals. But the mice that were surgically implanted with pancreatic-like cells grown from human stem cells didnt have those drastic swings and were able to regulate their blood sugar like healthy animals. Being able to reduce spikes in blood sugar levels is important because evidence suggests its those spikes that do a lot of the damage increasing risks for blindness, heart attack, and kidney failure, said Timothy Kieffer, a professor in UBCs … Continue reading
