He will be replaced by Hiroshi Matsumoto (right, pictured at a Kyoto University press conference in 2011). Ryoji Noyori, long-time president of Japan's RIKEN network of basic-research laboratories, has resigned after a year in which the organization was embroiled in controversy over fraudulent stem-cell papers. The 76-year-old Nobel-prizewinning chemist had headed RIKEN since October 2003, and was in the middle of his third five-year term. At a press conference on 24 March, RIKEN revealed Noyoris successor as of 1 April: Hiroshi Matsumoto, a former president of Kyoto University and an expert in space plasma physics. RIKEN, which will celebrate its centenary in 2017, employs more than 2,800 scientists on campuses across Japan, and commanded a 2012 budget of some 90 billion (at the time, around US$1.1 billion). In a statement posted on RIKEN's website, Noyori congratulated the institute on several achievements during his presidency, including the discovery of element 113, the establishment of the SACLA X-ray Free Electron Laser and the K supercomputer, and the worlds first clinical trial using induced pluripotent stem cells. RIKEN has attracted numerous outstanding scientists from … Continue reading

New IVF technology at Gateshead hospital will help parents desperate for children

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2015

Pioneering new technology at a Tyneside hospital is set to dramatically improve chances of successful IVF treatment for North East parents desperate for a child. The Fertility Unit at Gatesheads Queen Elizabeth Hospital will become the first in the region to use the new system which monitors embryo development every 15 minutes without the need to remove them from their incubator. It means embryologists are now able to identify healthier embryos that have the best chance of implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage. The new system uses highly specialised Embryoscope incubators incorporating time lapse imaging, meaning the embryos do not have to be removed from their safe and stable environment for inspection. Traditional methods of assessing development during IVF involve removing the embryos from the incubator to examine them under the microscope. This exposes them to changes in environmental conditions such as temperature and light which can be stressful and impair development. Ian Aird, consultant gynaecologist and clinical lead for fertility services at the QE, said: We are delighted to be the first unit in the North East to be able to offer the benefits of time lapse embryology to all our patients undergoing IVF. When eggs fertilise and … Continue reading

New, improved IVF arrives in region

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2015

A PIONEERING method of IVF treatment which is expected to increase pregnancy rates is now available in the North-East. The system uses specialised incubators incorporating time lapse imaging and powerful data analysing software. The Fertility Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead now offers time lapse monitoring to patients undergoing IVF treatment. The new technology incorporates the use of new "Embryoscope" incubators equipped with time lapse imaging. This provides digital images of embryos every 15 minutes, allowing constant assessment of embryo development without removing the embryos from the stable environment of the incubator. Traditional methods of assessing embryo development during IVF involve removing the embryos from the incubator to examine them under the microscope. This exposes the embryo to changes in environmental conditions such as temperature and light which can be stressful to the embryo and impair its development. The time lapse images obtained can also provide unprecedented detail of early embryonic development to pinpoint precise timings when key developmental milestones occur. Using the powerful data analysing software in the Embryoscope, this extra information should enable embryologists to identify healthier embryos that have the best chance of implantation and reduce the risk of miscarriage. Embryologists can now provide a … Continue reading

Researchers find link between genetic variation and alcohol dependence

Posted: Published on March 24th, 2015

The discovery could help scientists develop more effective drugs to combat alcoholism Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine researchers have discovered a biological clue that could help explain why some drinkers develop a dependence on alcohol and others do not. The findings move researchers closer to identifying those at risk for addiction early and designing better drug treatments to help people stop drinking. About 18 million people in the United States have an alcohol use disorder, according to National Institutes of Health statistics. The vast majority go untreated. "There are few and inadequate pharmacological treatments to help people who want to stop drinking, because this is a terrifically difficult human genetics problem," said Jill C. Bettinger, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, VCU School of Medicine. "If we can better understand the molecular effects of alcohol, we can design more rational treatments and even warn people who are more susceptible to developing a dependence." Bettinger is the senior author of a paper, "SWI/SNF Chromatin Remodeling Regulates Alcohol Response Behaviors in Caenorhabditis Elegans and is Associated With Alcohol Dependence in Humans," published Feb. 23 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The paper describes … Continue reading
