Biotechnology: One of the Last Great Growth Frontiers for Retail Investors

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

In 1986, Microsoft (MSFT) went public at a valuation of about $500 million. If you were fortunate enough to invest $10,000 in Microsoft on the first day of trading at $28/share (Microsofts stock price closed at $27.75 that day), your shares would be worth nearly $7 million today after accounting for stock splits and the reinvestment of dividends. Some 18 years later, Google (GOOG) went public at a valuation of about $23 billion. While investors in the Google IPO have done very well, the valuation of Google would need to grow to more than $16 trillion (about the size of the current U.S. gross domestic product) for them to earn a return comparable to what investors in the Microsoft IPO earned. Times have changed, and not necessarily for the better, for retail investors. With cloud-based computing services pushing down start-up costs for internet-based services and a regulatory environment that has driven up the costs and hassles associated with going public, an increasing number of high-growth technology companies are shunning the public markets in favor of remaining private (or being gobbled up by larger companies) during their periods of fastest growth. As venture capitalist Mark Andreessen has noted, these trends are … Continue reading

New chances for pharmacotherapy of primary ciliary dyskinesia patients

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

The first randomized, controlled trial on pharmacotherapy in primary ciliary dyskinesia is now in place IMAGE:This is the logo of EU-funded Bestcilia project. view more Credit: BESTCILIA | Better Experimental Screening and Treatment for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia As is typical for orphan diseases, PCD has only been studied to a limited extent. Most therapeutic strategies are derived from research on other respiratory disorders. At present, all treatment is off-label, with no orphan drug available. BESTCILIA aims to perform the first randomized controlled trial (RCT) on pharmacotherapy in PCD in order to develop evidence-based treatment practices for the disease. A potential hope for maintenance prophylactic therapy for PCD is azithromycin (AZN): an antibiotic with a host of beneficial anti-infection properties. The trial will evaluate its efficacy and potential adverse effects in patients, with respect to such outcome measures as the pulmonary exacerbation rate and PCD-specific quality of life. Following a year of meticulous preparations BESTCILIA partners involved in this research have made it possible to commence the trial in 5 countries: Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK. Patient recruitment has been set in motion; particular success was noted in Denmark, with as many as 15 patients randomized and already … Continue reading
