Stem cell treatment for knee arthritis shows promising results

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

FREDERICK, Md., March 23, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Recent studies employing adult stem cells obtained from bone marrow and fat have been used in patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. Results have indicated not only symptomatic improvement but also suggest that cartilage healing and regeneration may be taking place. According to Director, Dr. Nathan Wei of the Arthritis Treatment Center, "Osteoarthritis options in the past have been limited to symptom relief. We are now entering an era where we have therapies that may also rebuild lost cartilage." Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee affects more than 20 million Americans. It is a disease due to loss of cartilage, the gristle that caps the ends of long bones and provides cushioning and shock absorption. He goes on to say, "by administering adult stem cells, in a certain fashion, we may be able to restore lost cartilage. While this action has been demonstrated in multiple animal models, it has only been described in anecdotal reports in humans. Fortunately, we are now conducting clinical studies that are much better controlled and more scientifically valid." Dr. Wei adds, "The positive effect on arthritis is not only due to multiplication, division, and transformation of the stem cell … Continue reading

Darren Fletcher: I won't be trying to get the captaincy back off Scott Brown, he's done a great job

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

THEY say the quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves. If thats the case, Darren Fletcher doesnt need the Scotland armband this week. Nor does he covet it. Because he insists it wont make a blind bit of difference to what he delivers for Gordon Strachan, for his team-mates or for his country. The 31-year-old has held the role for four different managers and skippered the side in 22 of his 66 caps since taking over from Barry Ferguson in 2009. However, his enforced two-year hiatus bravely fighting the effects of ulcerative colitis has seen Gordon Strachan hand the reins to Scott Brown in his absence. Now Fletcher is fit again and firingon all cylinders, re-energised and re-enthused at West Brom under a manager who made him captain on day one. But that doesnt mean hes arriving in Glasgow today giving it the big I am. Instead hes looking at ways he can help Brown, not looking at ways to depose him. And hes looking for a way back into a team which no longer guarantees him his status as first name on the sheet. Fletch said: Im not going to change the way … Continue reading

Brave toddler who suffers 80 fits a day needs 200k for specialist treatment

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

The parents of a tragic tot who has up to 80 fits a day are desperately trying to raise funds so they can take her to America for treatment. Little Dakota Roberts who did not breathe for the first seven-and-a-half minutes of her life, was born with meningitis before being diagnosed with cerebral palsy and West syndrome. Her condition, which means she is not expected to live past five, is suffered by only one in 250,000 people, Wales Online reported. Her battling parents Amy Trow and Daniel Roberts are desperate to raise the 200,000 they need for her treatment. Amy, 22, said: On a normal day she might have ten fits but other days I lose count. She will just go on her back and shake. Its awful to see and it is upsetting. But I have to man up and be there for Dakota. It usually lasts for about 20 minutes but they can go on for hours. If she does not come out after 20 minutes I have to give her medicine. She cannot walk or talk or eat. She has to feed through a tube in her tummy." The mum-of-one from Wrexham, Wales, said Dakota remains cheerful … Continue reading

College student suffers severe head injury after falling out of bed while sleeping

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

Friends and family are coming together to support a Georgia Tech student injured during a freak accident at his fraternity. Family says Clark Jacobs, 20, fell out of his bed at his fraternity while he slept and suffered a severe head injury. We thought he had the flu or meningitis because he did not look like someone who had a brain injury at first. He was completely cognizant, conversational, said his father, Ron Jacobs. His father said that at first Clark Jacobs didnt realize hed fallen out of the bed. He just climbed back into bed while sleeping, Ron Jacobs said. His condition quickly worsened after the Jan. 10 fall. We treated him (at home) for less than a day and decided to take him to the hospital because with stiff neck, we were afraid it might be meningitis. They did a CT scan and we realized he had fractured skull, said Mariellen Jacobs, his mother."He ended up having a fractured skull and a blood clot. Unfortunately it led to a bleed in his brain and (doctors) had to do emergency surgery to save his life. Right now, Clark Jacobs is still unable to talk or walk and is recovering … Continue reading

New treatment for MS slows disease progression, reduces relapses

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

HOUSTON - A groundbreaking new treatment for multiple sclerosis is now available in the United States and is being used to treat patients in Texas. The drug Lemtrada was initially denied approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration but the decision was reversed several months ago, after a big outcry from the MS patient community. Lisa Capps was excited to try the new treatment. She'll spend the week hooked up to an intravenous treatment of Lemtrada for about seven hours a day for five days. However, she believes the time spent will be worth it. Other treatments for MS haven't worked for her and said she believes the new treatment could give her a fighting chance. "This was the newest thing out there and what they call the closest to a cure that we can get to MS right now," said Capps. Capps was first diagnosed about a year ago, shortly after her daughter was born. "I have to walk with a cane now and I also have cognitive problems, so I have difficulty thinking, focusing, holding attention," she said. As the disease progresses, it could lead to vision loss, complete inability to walk, urinary and bowel disfunction, the … Continue reading
