Chlorine Use in Sewage Treatment Could Promote Antibiotic Resistance

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

EMBARGOED FOR RELEASE: Sunday, March 22, 2015, 5 a.m. Eastern Time Note to journalists: Please report that this research will be presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society. Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only DENVER, March 22, 2015 Chlorine, a disinfectant commonly used in most wastewater treatment plants, may be failing to completely eliminate pharmaceuticals from wastes. As a result, trace levels of these substances get discharged from the plants to the nations waterways. And now, scientists are reporting preliminary studies that show chlorine treatment may encourage the formation of new, unknown antibiotics that could also enter the environment, potentially contributing to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. The research, which will be presented today at the 249th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), suggests that a re-evaluation of wastewater treatment and disinfection practices is needed. The ACS is the worlds largest scientific society. The national meeting, which takes place here through Thursday, features nearly 11,000 presentations on a wide range of science topics. Pharmaceuticals that get out into the environment can harm aquatic life, making them react slowly in the wild and disrupting their hormone systems, notes Olya Keen, Ph.D. She adds … Continue reading

New potential for personalized treatments in bowel cancer

Posted: Published on March 23rd, 2015

Scientists have found that genetic changes in bowel tumours are linked to the way the body's immune system responds to the cancer, according to research published today (Monday) in the journal Oncoimmunology*. For the first time, Cancer Research UK researchers at the University of Birmingham have found that certain genetic flaws in bowel cancer are more likely to trigger an immune response at the site of tumours, meaning that treatments to boost this immune response further could potentially be helpful for these patients. Finding out what's happening in a cancer patient's immune system can be difficult and takes time. These findings suggest that genetic profiles of patients' tumours could be used as an easy and fast way of diagnosing whether they are suitable for immunotherapy treatments, and if so which ones. Cancer Research UK's FOCUS4** trial is already using the genetics of bowel cancer to offer patients stratified medicine and this study suggests that we could further expand this work to include immunotherapies. Gary Middleton, Professor of Medical Oncology at the School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Birmingham, said: "The field of immunotherapy is gaining lots of momentum and this study shows a new finding for bowel cancer. … Continue reading

March 26, 2014 Merck Licenses NanoBio Technology Associated Press ANN ARBOR, Mich., -NanoBio Corporationtoday announced a licensing agreement with a subsidiary of Merck &Co., Inc., known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, for theuse of its nanoemulsion (NE) adjuvant technology. Under the agreement, Merck receives exclusive rights to NanoBio's NEadjuvant for use in an intranasal respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)vaccine and non-exclusive rights for use in an intranasal seasonalinfluenza and/or universal seasonal influenza ("Flu") vaccine. NanoBioreceives an upfront payment and is eligible to receive milestonepayments based on Merck RSV and Flu vaccine candidates' developmentand regulatory approvals, as well as royalties on sales of any MerckRSV or Flu vaccines that ultimately use the NanoBio NE adjuvanttechnology. NanoBio's NanoStat@ technology platform employs a novel oil-in-waternanoemulsion that can incorporate, deliver and adjuvant multipleantigen types. The NE adjuvant is effective when administered viaintranasal, intramuscular or subcutaneous vaccination. In recentstudies, NanoBio has demonstrated that intranasal vaccination elicitsrobust systemic and mucosal immunity, thereby offering enhancedprotection against respiratory infections and sexually transmitteddiseases compared to intramuscular vaccination. "We've collaborated with Merck on research in RSV since 2011 and arevery pleased to broaden our relationship with this license agreementcovering vaccine candidates for two respiratory diseases," said DavidPeralta, chief … Continue reading

The 15-minute procedure involves cells taken from a patients own body, which are then reinjected into their heart to repair damaged muscle. It is hoped that the procedure could improve the quality of life for patients suffering from heart failure, which affects 900,000 people in the UK. The condition is caused by the heart failing to pump enough blood around the body at the right pressure, because the muscle has become too weak or stiff to work properly. It causes breathlessness and extreme tiredness, and can even lead to sudden death. Read this article: How stem cells can … Continue reading
