SMU’s Phil Cochran remembered as mentor, celebrated outdoorsman

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

The sudden and unexpected loss of Dr. Phil Cochran, a biology professor, department chair and 1977 alumnus, left a tremendous void at Saint Marys University but his legacy lives on in his work and the memories he has left behind. Cochran, 59, died March 4 after a brief illness. To those who knew him best, he was many things. A rugged outdoorsman, Cochran could frequently be found catching fish on the Mississippi River, trapping bullsnakes in the Weaver area, or relocating rattlesnakes who innocently slithered into Winona-area backyards. But Cochran was no less the gentle and loving husband, father, and grandfather who relished having his young granddaughters sleep peacefully on his chest. An avid and accomplished researcher, Cochran was never one to boast, despite being published hundreds of times on topics ranging from lampreys and rattlesnakes to wood turtles, mudpuppies, and parasitic catfish. He also co-authored a book about the fishes of Wisconsin, was active in numerous professional organizations, and regularly presented papers at conferences across the U.S. and Canada. To those who played noon pick-up ball with him in the Saint Marys gym, he was a basketball enthusiast with a wicked hook shot who wasnt above a little good-natured … Continue reading

Christopher Jewell, an assistant professor in the University of Maryland Fischell Department of Bioengineering, was awarded a three-year, $250,000 grant from the Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy to develop gene therapy to promote cancer immunity, the university and the alliance announced Monday. Jewell's research could create vaccine "depots" among the lymph nodes, specialized tissues that control responses against disease and infection. The alliance is a nonprofit that sponsors promising research into cell and gene therapies to battle cancer. Jewell is one of two grant recipients this year and among 46 since 2001 from the alliance, which has a goal of replacing radiation, chemotherapy and surgery, while turning cancer into a manageable, treatable disease. The Stamford, Conn.-based group has handed out more than $25 million in funding for the cause. View post: Maryland researcher wins grant to study alternative cancer therapy … Continue reading

Those affected by allergies has trebled in the past 20 years to 21 million Allergies are partly due to genetic predisposition but also environment Part of the problem is thought to be down to improvements in hygiene Here, experts explain other surprising factors that affect children's allergies By Thea Jourdan for the Daily Mail Published: 19:04 EST, 16 March 2015 | Updated: 19:39 EST, 16 March 2015 13 shares 13 View comments There seems little doubt that allergies are increasingly common. And now scientists are uncovering intriguing evidence to suggest why. A recent Swedish study suggested that dishwashers could be responsible for eczema in children. Researchers found youngsters who eat off dishes that have been scrubbed by hand are significantly less likely to develop allergies. Apparently, dishwashers are too good at getting rid of all the microbes, some of which keep our immune systems healthy. A recent Swedish study shows that dishwashers may be responsible foreczema in children and researchers also found that children eating off hand-washed dishes develop less allergies (file image) See the rest here: The everyday habits that are jeopardising your health … Continue reading

Folic Acid May Help Ward Off Stroke in People With High Blood Pressure

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

Latest High Blood Pressure News SUNDAY, March 15, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Folic acid -- the same nutrient women take in pregnancy to help ward off birth defects -- may also help lower stroke risk in people with high blood pressure, a new Chinese study finds. The findings are intriguing, one U.S. heart health expert said. "If all that is required to prevent the greatest health threat worldwide is a vitamin, then we need to consider checking patients' blood levels of folic acid and supplementing if needed," said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. The new study was led by Dr. Yong Huo of Peking University First Hospital in Beijing. Huo's team tracked outcomes for more than 20,000 adults in China with high blood pressure who had not suffered a heart attack or stroke. Participants were randomly assigned to take a daily pill with folic acid and the high blood pressure drug enalapril (brand name Vasotec) or a pill with enalapril alone. Over a median treatment period of 4.5 years, first strokes occurred in 2.7 percent of those in the enalapril/folic acid group and 3.4 percent of those in the enalapril group, … Continue reading
