Folic Acid May Help Ward Off Stroke in People With High Blood Pressure

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

Latest High Blood Pressure News SUNDAY, March 15, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Folic acid -- the same nutrient women take in pregnancy to help ward off birth defects -- may also help lower stroke risk in people with high blood pressure, a new Chinese study finds. The findings are intriguing, one U.S. heart health expert said. "If all that is required to prevent the greatest health threat worldwide is a vitamin, then we need to consider checking patients' blood levels of folic acid and supplementing if needed," said Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. The new study was led by Dr. Yong Huo of Peking University First Hospital in Beijing. Huo's team tracked outcomes for more than 20,000 adults in China with high blood pressure who had not suffered a heart attack or stroke. Participants were randomly assigned to take a daily pill with folic acid and the high blood pressure drug enalapril (brand name Vasotec) or a pill with enalapril alone. Over a median treatment period of 4.5 years, first strokes occurred in 2.7 percent of those in the enalapril/folic acid group and 3.4 percent of those in the enalapril group, … Continue reading

Scientists make surprising finding in stroke research

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

Scientists at The University of Manchester have made an important new discovery about the brain's immune system that could lead to potential new treatments for stroke and other related conditions. Inflammation is activated in the brain after a stroke, but rather than aiding recovery it actually causes and worsens damage. That damage can be devastating. In fact, stroke is responsible for 10% of deaths worldwide and is the leading cause of disability. Therefore, understanding how inflammation is regulated in the brain is vital for the development of drugs to limit the damage triggered by a stroke. Dr David Brough from the Faculty of Life Sciences, working alongside colleagues including Professors Dame Nancy Rothwell and Stuart Allan, has studied the role of inflammasomes in stroke. These inflammasomes are large protein complexes essential for the production of the inflammatory protein interleukin-1. Interleukin-1 has many roles in the body, and contributes to cell death in the brain following a stroke. Dr Brough explains: "Very little is known about how inflammasomes might be involved in brain injury. Therefore we began by studying the most well researched inflammasome NLRP3, which is known to be activated when the body is injured. Surprisingly we found that this … Continue reading

New treatment for multiple sclerosis slows disease progression, reduces relapses

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

NEWS Posted YESTERDAY, 5:57 PM Updated YESTERDAY, 6:31 PM SAN ANTONIO - A groundbreaking new treatment for multiple sclerosis is now available in the United States and is being used to treat patients in San Antonio. The drug Lemtrada was initially denied approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration but the decision was reversed several months ago, after a big outcry from the MS patient community. Lisa Capps was excited to try the new treatment. She'll spend the week hooked up to an intravenous treatment of Lemtrada for about seven hours a day for five days. However, she believes the time spent will be worth it. Other treatments for MS haven't worked for her and said she believes the new treatment could give a fighting chance. "This was the newest thing out there and what they call the closest to a cure that we can get to MS right now," said Capps. Capps was first diagnosed about a year ago, shortly after he daughter was born. "I have to walk with a cane now and I also have cognitive problems, so I have difficulty thinking, focusing, holding attention," she said. As the disease progresses, it could lead to vision … Continue reading

Dr. Mary- Claire King to speak at Morehouse School of Medicine on how genetic screening for all women can lower risk …

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) March 16, 2015 African American women have higher death rates from breast cancer than do white women. Veena Rao, Ph.D., researcher, professor and co-director of the Cancer Biology Program in the department of OB/GYN at Morehouse School of Medicine, has pointed to multiple factors that contribute to the increased vulnerability of African American women, such as barriers to testing and quality of treatment. Leading medical researchers, including University of Washington geneticist and Lasker Laureate Mary-Claire King, highlight additional factors undetected inherited mutations and now recommend offering genetic testing for all women at about age 30. Dr. King will make a free, public address at the Morehouse School of Medicine on March 19, to discuss Inherited Breast Cancer: From Gene Discovery to Public Health. Dr. Kings discovery in 1990 of the BRCA1 breast cancer gene demonstrated a mechanism of inherited cancer and proved that gene mutations could predict vulnerability to the disease. A 2013 study of inherited predisposition to breast cancer among African American women by Dr. King and Dr. Olufunmilayo Olopade, director of The Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics, at the University of Chicago, found that 22 percent of African American breast cancer patients inherited a damaging … Continue reading

AACC Cautions FDA Against Over-Regulating the Genetic Testing Technology Vital to Precision Medicine

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise WASHINGTON Today AACC sent formal comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the agencys proposed regulation of next-generation sequencing tests. AACC appreciates FDAs efforts to seek input from the healthcare community before developing new policy in this area, but is concerned that FDA regulation of next-generation sequencing could impede the advancement of precision medicine. Precision medicine uses a persons unique biological makeup, including genetics, to determine which treatments that person would respond to best. Genetic tests hold the potential to predict an individuals risk of developing numerous different conditions throughout life. Having this knowledge could lead one to take a more proactive approach to his or her health, particularly with respect to chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes that could be prevented with basic lifestyle changes. Next-generation sequencing will enhance the application of precision medicine by making genetic testing more readily available. After reviewing FDAs preliminary discussion paper on the topic, Optimizing FDAs Regulatory Oversight of Next-Generation Sequencing Diagnostic Tests, AACC recommends that oversight of next-generation sequencing remain under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) like other laboratory developed tests. CLIA-regulated laboratories conducting next-generation sequencing testing are experienced … Continue reading

Beware stem cell therapy for lung disease

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2015

Clinics in other countries for some time have promised dramatic results in the treatment of lung disease, primarily emphysema, through the use of autologous stem cells obtained from the patient. The stem cells are extracted from adipose (fat) tissue, treated and then injected into the patient. The cells then supposedly go to work regenerating and replacing the damaged lung tissue. Several of this type of clinic are now popping up in parts of the United States, mostly in California and Florida. Their advertisements are filled with testimonials from patients, extolling the virtues of the treatments. The treatments are quite expensive, and would be an absolute godsend for the 30 million Americans who suffer from some stage of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). If they worked. Trouble is, none of these clinics or their treatments are approved by the FDA, and the only proof of their effectiveness is anecdotal, coming from selected customers. Anyone with a chronic, progressive disease, such as COPD, will usually find themselves in a situation of desperation, eager to embrace any promises of a cure. I have been there, and it is a terrible situation. Sadly, further research shows that institutions that are working on stem cell … Continue reading
