Two college professors will study in Maryland this summer

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2015

RANDOLPH TWP. Jenifer Martin, assistant professor of biology, and Keri Flanagan, assistant professor of chemistry at County College of Morris (CCM), will be joining a select group of teachers from across the nation this July at the 2015 Project Kaleidoscope Summer Leadership Institute II at Claggett Center in Adamstown, Md. Nine top science teachers will mentor attendees on leadership skills for directing innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) initiatives on their campuses. Currently, there is a shortage of educated workers in STEM fields. In the Department of Biology and Chemistry, our goal is to see increased enrollment and retention in our programs to get educated workers into those fields, says Martin. Learning how to make STEM courses more relevant to students so they are attracted to these fields is very important. Thats what these mentoring sessions help teachers to do. This honor comes on the heels of a $199,999 grant, proposed by Flanagan and Martin, that was recently awarded to the Department of Biology and Chemistry at CCM by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support programs such as the colleges new Pathways of Applied Career Experience (PACE) science initiative. PACE was developed to increase enrollment and retention rates … Continue reading

Zimbabwe: Only the Sky Is the Limit for Mguni

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2015

By Ellina Mhlanga GROWING up as a sickly child suffering from asthma and eczema, Anna Mguni did not let her conditions deter her from pursuing her dream in sport. Instead, it was the zeal and a persistent intent and purpose to be seen and treated like any other children that gave her power to spend time on the basketball court, on the hockey field and at times in the swimming pool. The fact that she had eczema - a medical condition that causes the skin to become inflamed or irritated - would not stop her love for the pool, and asthma - a common chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory system - was not good enough to keep her away from contact sports. "I was a sickly child. I had asthma and I also had eczema and for me I think at the time the drive was I just wanted to fit in with other children and almost be normal because you find that if you have got asthma you can't run, you can't be active. "So it was probably just that drive to want to be like others. I was very fortunate that my parents took me to schools … Continue reading
