Caldwell resident fighting battle with multiple sclerosis

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

CALDWELL Eleni Christoforou, 32, hopes that a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) will strike a decisive blow in her decade-long battle with multiple sclerosis (MS). The Caldwell resident said the goal is to erase any memory of the disease from her body. However, even with insurance coverage, the procedure will cost Christoforou roughly $20,000 between traveling to Chicago, where the transplant is done, and the other costs associated with removing and reinserting her stem cells, as well as fertility treatments. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that disrupts the brains ability to communicate with the body. The hematopoietic stem cell transplant will remove Christoforous stem cells from her bone marrow and then she will undergo chemotherapy before her own stem cells are injected back into her system with hopefully no memory of the MS, she explained. Christoforous first symptoms left her unable to walk up the stairs, bumping into walls, losing her memory and confused. There were days where she would forget how to get home or how she arrived at work, she said. She had a particularly bad episode in July of 2014 that left her unable to speak, walk, see and even feed herself. She spent a week … Continue reading

Plastic surgery up by 43 percent among men: Report

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

The vanity business appears is flourishing. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery announced Thursday that Americans spent over $12 billion on assorted procedures in 2014. One sector is on the increase. More men are turning to aesthetic cosmetic procedures, with dramatic increases seen in both surgical and nonsurgical options over the past 5 years and a 43 percent increase overall, the organization stated. There were over 10 million cosmetic procedures performed last year - with the greatest increase in buttock augmentation, up by 86 percent - along with labiaplasty (up 49 percent), and nonsurgical fat reduction, which has increased by 43 percent. For those who need an explanation, labiaplasty is contouring of distinctly female body parts. The group has previously cited this procedure as a global trend and places it in the category of ever-evolving concept of beauty. Meanwhile, liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks and nose surgery - all longtime fixtures in the field - are the top five procedures for men and women overall. But men have their favorites. Blepharoplasty - an eyelid, lift, essentially - plus male breast reduction and facelifts are the top three procedures. Since the organization began collecting statistical data in 1997, … Continue reading

New Procedure May Turn Brown Eyes Blue

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

The idea to use lasers to turn brown eyes blue was born in an unlikely place: a dermatologist's office. Driving home after having some pigment spots removed from his skin by laser, Gregg Homer wondered what would happen if you used a similar laser on the eyes. An inventor who had a Ph.D in biology, Homer did a little research and quickly realized the potential of the idea: a study in the 1980s had shown that underneath every brown eye is a blue eye. And that brown layer, Homer discovered, appeared to be superficial enough that it could, theoretically, be removed. "I went back to my dermatologist and said, I've got a question for you," Homer told Discovery News. "What would happen if you used this on an iris?" The dermatologist eventually joined his board of investigators, and now, almost 20 years later, the surgery is going through human testing in Costa Rica via Homer's company called Stroma. The original idea, that the frequency of the green laser is such that it passes straight through the cornea and is only absorbed by dark color, makes it "incredibly safe and incredibly differentiating," Homer said. The change isn't immediate; the laser is … Continue reading

Scientists sound alarm over DNA editing of human embryos

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

Amid rumours that precision gene-editing techniques have been used to modify the DNA of human embryos, researchers have called for a moratorium on the use of the technology in reproductive cells. MOLEKUUL/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY The gene-editing technique CRISPR uses an enzyme (white) and RNA guides (blue) to cut DNA at a point specified by a DNA fragment (red). In a Comment published on 12 March in Nature1, Edward Lanphier, chairman of the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine in Washington DC, and four co-authors call on scientists to agree not to modify human embryos even for research. Such research could be exploited for non-therapeutic modifications. We are concerned that a public outcry about such an ethical breach could hinder a promising area of therapeutic development, write Lanphier and his colleagues, who include Fyodor Urnov, a pioneer in gene-editing techniques and scientist at Sangamo BioSciences in Richmond, California. Many groups, including Urnov's company, are already using gene-editing tools to develop therapies that correct genetic defects in people (such as by editing white blood cells). They fear that attempts to produce designer babies by applying the methods to embryos will create a backlash against all use of the technology. Known as germline modification, edits … Continue reading

Wheelchair Kamikaze: Stem Cell Treatments for Multiple …

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

As all patients with MS are aware, the currently available treatments do nothing to cure the disease or repair the damage that it does. At their best, todays crop of disease modifying drugs (DMDs) quiet the disease, thereby improving the quality of life for many of the patients taking them, especially those suffering from relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. However, many of these drugs carry with them risky side effect profiles, and though the newest compounds represent advances over their predecessors, patients are crying out for revolution, not evolution. Stem cells could represent the revolution patients so fervently desire. Because of their ability to transform into almost any type of cell in the human body, stem cells may hold the key to achieving one of the holy grails of modern medicine, the regeneration and repair of damaged tissues. For MS patients, this could potentially mean the reversal of disability, and with it the long dreamt of disposal of wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. We are still a long way from that lofty goal, however, but the first few steps along the path to that salvation are currently being taken. Though stem cell research is advancing in laboratories worldwide, the science of using … Continue reading

Neuralstem announces topline results of Phase II ALS trial

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

GERMANTOWN, MD, March 12, 2015 -- Neuralstem, Inc. (NYSE MKT: CUR) announced top line data from the Phase II trial of NSI-566 spinal cord-derived neural stem cells under development for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study met primary safety endpoints. The maximum tolerated dose of 16 million transplanted cells and the surgery was well tolerated. Secondary efficacy endpoints at nine months post-surgery indicate a 47% response rate to the stem cell treatment, as measured by either near-zero slope of decline or positive slope of ALSFRS score in seven out of 15 patients and by either a near-zero decline, or positive strengthening, of grip strength in seven out of 15 patients. Grip strength is an indicator of direct muscle strength of the lower arm. ALSFRS is a standard clinical test used to evaluate the functional status of ALS patients. The average ALSFRS score for responders at 9 months after treatment was 37. Non-responders scored an average of 14. These scores represent 93%, versus 35%, of the baseline score retained, respectively, by the responders versus non-responders at 9 months, which is a statistically significant difference. As measured by an average slope of decline of ALSFRS, responders' disease progression was … Continue reading
