More Evidence That Hormone Therapy Might Not Help Women's Hearts

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

TUESDAY, March 10, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- There's yet another study looking at the potential dangers of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms, and this one supports the notion that the treatment may not help women's hearts. The research, a review of collected data on the issue, found that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) does not protect most postmenopausal women against heart disease and may even increase their risk of stroke. Also, the findings suggest that the harms and benefits of hormone therapy may vary depending on woman's age when she started the therapy, explained study lead author Dr. Henry Boardman, of the cardiovascular medicine department at the University of Oxford in England. "This 'Timing Hypothesis' may be the critical key to the use of HRT," agreed one expert, Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, director of women and heart disease at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "For certain women who fit the criteria, being on HRT early in menopause may be beneficial, and the fear of taking it may be unfounded," said Steinbaum, who was not involved in the new study. The findings were published March 10 in the journal Cochrane Library. A woman's natural supply of estrogen diminishes after menopause, … Continue reading

Hormone pills pose blood clot, stroke risk – study

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

Women taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) pills should be made aware that there is a small chance that they increase the risk of blood clots and strokes, according to results from a new study. Scientists at international research group Cochrane made the link when they looked at medical trials involving 40,000 women. The pills are often taken as they can ease the symptoms of menopause and offer protection against heart disease; however experts suggest discussing their options with a doctor would be wise. This isn't the first time the pills have been linked to negative side-effects; over the years there have been connections with breast and ovarian cancer. There has always been a debate on the benefits versus negatives of taking the HRT pills, however most experts seem to agree that it is a safe treatment to help control menopause symptoms, such as hot flushes. Maureen Talbot of the British Heart Foundation says: "This study supports what we already know and indicates a possible increased risk of stroke or formation of a blood clot in some women. It is important that women have a full understanding of the risks and benefits of HRT and should talk this through with their … Continue reading

Stem cells in the brain: Limited self-renewal

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

The generation of neurons (neurogenesis) in humans is predominantly limited to development; in the adult stage it takes place in only a few regions of the brain. These regions contain neural stem cells that generate neurons in a process with various intermediary stages. Stem cell renewal is limited - total number drops Until now it was thought that maintaining the stem cell pool was based on the self-renewal of individual stem cells. The team of scientists headed by Dr. Jovica Ninkovic and Professor Dr. Magdalena Gtz were able to refute this: Both the self-renewal rate and the diversity of neurons formed from the stem cells are limited, and the number of stem cells decreases with age. "Our findings explain why neurogenesis declines in later years, as there are fewer and fewer neural stem cells. At the same time, we gained new knowledge on basic mechanisms of neurogenesis that until now were not understood," says first author Dr. Filippo Calzolari. Therapeutic approaches must focus on stem cells themselves Approaches to new therapies for brain diseases, such as stroke or dementia, for example, particularly concentrate on replacing lost neurons by stimulating the generation of new cells from stem cells. "In light of … Continue reading

Health secretary praises Newcastle scientists for 'historic' DNA breakthrough

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

Pioneering DNA research set to offer hope to millions of people could also help secure more jobs for Newcastle, health secretary Jeremy Hunt has told the Chronicle. Mr Hunt was in the city to meet scientists and Tyneside families who have been involved with genetic testing that has been labelled as significant as the development of the internet by Prime Minister David Cameron. In a medical breakthrough, North East scientists taking part in an unprecedented genome sequencing project have, for the first time in the UK, diagnosed rare diseases in two families after mapping their genes. The technique, developed at Newcastle University, uses an individuals genetic blueprint to enable doctors to personalise medical care. It means the Tyneside patients involved can now receive specialised treatment for their conditions, as well as helping prevent future generations who share their DNA from suffering a life of uncertainty. Mr Hunt was introduced to the families taking part in the 100,000 Genomes Project at the Institute of Genetic Medicine at Newcastle University. He said: This is historic, a huge amount of hard work into this. Its a very proud day for Newcastle and a very proud day for the NHS. If you said in … Continue reading

Media portray unrealistic timelines for stem cell therapies

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

A new study by University of Alberta law researchers reveals sometimes overly optimistic news coverage of clinical translation of stem cell therapies--and as spokespeople, scientists need to be mindful of harnessing public expectations. "As the dominant voice in respect to timelines for stem cell therapies, the scientists quoted in these stories need to be more aware of the importance of communicating realistic timelines to the press," said researcher Kalina Kamenova, who co-authored the study with professor Timothy Caulfield in the University of Alberta's Health Law Institute, based in the Faculty of Law. Their analysis of media coverage showed that most news reports were highly optimistic about the future of stem cell therapies and forecasted unrealistic timelines for clinical use. The study, published in the latest issue of Science Translational Medicine, examined 307 news reports covering translational stem cell research in major daily newspapers in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom between 2010 and 2013. While the field of stem cell research holds tremendous promise, "it has also been surrounded by tremendous hype, and we wanted to quantify that in some degree," Caulfield said. "Pop culture representations have an impact on how the public perceives the readiness of stem … Continue reading

Custom blood cells engineered by researchers

Posted: Published on March 12th, 2015

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have successfully corrected a genetic error in stem cells from patients with sickle cell disease, and then used those cells to grow mature red blood cells, they report. The study represents an important step toward more effectively treating certain patients with sickle cell disease who need frequent blood transfusions and currently have few options. The results appear in an upcoming issue of the journal Stem Cells. In sickle cell disease, a genetic variant causes patients' blood cells to take on a crescent, or sickle, shape, rather than the typical round shape. The crescent-shaped cells are sticky and can block blood flow through vessels, often causing great pain and fatigue. Getting a transplant of blood-making bone marrow can potentially cure the disease. But for patients who either cannot tolerate the transplant procedure, or whose transplants fail, the best option may be to receive regular blood transfusions from healthy donors with matched blood types. The problem, says Linzhao Cheng, Ph.D., the Edythe Harris Lucas and Clara Lucas Lynn Professor of Hematology and a member of the Institute for Cell Engineering, is that over time, patients' bodies often begin to mount an immune response against the foreign blood. "Their … Continue reading
