Design and build of synthetic DNA goes back to ‘BASIC’

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2015

A new technique for creating artificial DNA that is faster, more accurate and more flexible than existing methods has been developed by scientists at Imperial College London. The new system - called BASIC - is a major advance for the field of synthetic biology, which designs and builds organisms able to make useful products such as medicines, energy, food, materials and chemicals. To engineer new organisms, scientists build artificial genes from individual molecules and then put these together to create larger genetic constructs which, when inserted into a cell, will create the required product. Various attempts have been made to standardise the design and assembly process but, until now, none have been completely successful. BASIC, created by researchers from Imperial's Centre for Synthetic Biology & Innovation, combines the best features of the most popular methods while overcoming their limitations, creating a system that is fast, flexible and accurate. The new technique should enable greater advances in research and could offer industry a way to automate the design and manufacture of synthetic DNA. Dr Geoff Baldwin, from Imperial's Department of Life Sciences, explains: "BASIC uses standardised parts which, like Lego, have the same joining device, so parts will fit together in … Continue reading

‘Roly poly’ soft, wobbly robot BANGS EXPLOSIVELY, leaps 0.5m in air

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2015

Boffins at the Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering at Zurich have developed an untethered, jumping, roly-poly soft robot powered by explosive gases. Soft Robotics is a field of bio-inspired robotics which derives its inspiration from animals such as starfish, worms, squid and octopuses. Avoiding the use of hard components in the design allows the robot to maneuver in situations where a rigid gait would be inefficient. While movement in soft robots can be driven by magnetic fields, electrical charge or pneumatic expansion, the untethered, jumping, roly-poly hybrid robot is combustion-actuated. Powered by nitrous oxide-propane/butane gas mixtures, the 2.1kg robot can jump and cover a distance of 0.5m with a single hop-and-roll movement. In the article An Untethered, Jumping Roly-Poly Soft Robot Driven by Combustion published in the peer-reviewed Soft Robotics journal, the researchers stated their intention was to illustrate the application of fuels to directly power a soft machine, which was a success, although in terms of running time, this soft robot still has to be further improved. Operation time was no longer than 2 min, which is clearly unacceptable for potential outdoor use. The roly-poly behaviour of the Zurich team's robot is in stark contrast to the disconcerting crawl-cum-slither … Continue reading

Kate Walsh: I'd make a cameo "Grey's Anatomy"

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2015

Kate Walsh is very familiar with broadcast networks' long seasons -- having starred in both "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice." The actress recently appeared in season 1 of FX's award-winning "Fargo," and says she's currently reading scripts for her next project. And this time she may opt for a shorter run. "I think I'll be looking more towards cable," Walsh said during a recent visit to CBS News. "It's a little shorter order because those are long hours when you're doing 22 to 25 episodes a year. It's a lot of work and it's fun, but it's a grind." Walsh knows that "grind" well thanks to stints on television as Dr. Addison Montgomery. "Private Practice," alone ran from 2007-2013 on ABC. She first introduced that character in 2005 on "Grey's Anatomy" -- and remembers being so surprised that she was asked back to officially join the show. "I really just thought it was going to be five episodes or something on the show," Walsh, 47, said about "Grey's." "But it turned into a series regular, then a spinoff. We really kind of went through everything together...We were like, 'Oh now it's [Grey's] a huge hit. And now people know us … Continue reading

Younger immigrants at greater risk of developing IBD: study

Posted: Published on March 11th, 2015

Andrea Janus, CTVNews.ca Published Tuesday, March 10, 2015 11:09AM EDT Last Updated Tuesday, March 10, 2015 10:04PM EDT Young immigrants to Canada are at greater risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease -- including Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis -- according to the findings of a new Canadian study released Tuesday. Researchers at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and the Childrens Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) say that children who immigrate to Canada appear to take on the same risk level that Canadian children face. And the younger the age of the children when they arrive to Canada, the greater their risk of developing IBD. IBD is a painful and debilitating condition that causes inflammation in the digestive tract. The researchers compared health administration data and immigration data to establish Canadian incidence rates of IBD between 1994 and 2010. They then compared rates of IBD among immigrants to Canada and their children with rates among non-immigrants. Researchers found that the younger an immigrant was at the time of his or her arrival in Canada, the greater the risk for developing IBD. The risk increased by 14 per cent per younger decade. That means a nine-year-old immigrant had a 14 … Continue reading
