Easing Depression May Boost Heart Health, Study Finds

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

THURSDAY, March 5, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that treating depression with antidepressants may have an added bonus: reducing heart risks. "Screening and treatment of depressive symptoms should be a high priority" in heart patients, lead author Heidi May, a cardiovascular epidemiologist at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart Institute in Salt Lake City, said in a news release from the American College of Cardiology (ACC). The findings are scheduled to be presented March 15 at the ACC's annual meeting, in San Diego. In its study, May's team analyzed health data from more than 5,300 people in Utah with moderate to severe depression. People who took antidepressants alone had a 53 percent lower risk of death, heart disease and stroke over three years than those who did not take antidepressants or statins. Taking a cholesterol-lowering statin, either alone or with antidepressants, did not significantly reduce the risk, the researchers found. The level of depression appeared to be key, May said. While antidepressant therapy didn't seem to boost the heart health of people with little or no depression, it did have an effect on those with more serious depression. The study couldn't prove that the use of antidepressants helped … Continue reading

BIO Extends Nomination Deadline for Rosalind Franklin Award.

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

Washington, D.C. The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) has officially extended its deadline for the Rosalind Franklin Award for Leadership in Industrial Biotechnology. In its second year, the BIO Rosalind Franklin Award was created to honor an outstanding woman in the field of industrial biotechnology and bioprocessing. The Rosalind Franklin Society will sponsor the 2015 BIO Rosalind Franklin Award which will be presented at the 2015 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology to be held July 19-22, 2015 at the Palais des congrs de Montral in Montral, Canada. Watson and Crick are generally recognized for discovering the structure of DNA while the accomplishments of Dr. Franklin are too often overlooked. This award was created to help carry on the legacy of Rosalind Franklin who not only aided in the expansion of biotechnology but also helped pave the way for women in the field, said Brent Erickson, executive vice president for BIOs Industrial & Environmental Section. Rosalind Franklins use of X-ray diffraction images led to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA in 1953. Her images of the double helix and measurements of a single unit were the data used by Watson and Crick to create the model for DNA, which … Continue reading

Is Neuroscience Based On Biology?

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

There is a popular view that all of the natural sciences can be arranged in a chain or ladder according to the complexity of their subjects. On this view, physics forms the base of the ladder because it deals with the simplest building-blocks of matter, atoms and subatomic particles. Chemistry is next up because it studies interacting atoms i.e. molecules. Biology studies complex collections of molecules, i.e. cells. Then comes neuroscience which deals with a complex collection of interacting cells the brain. Psychology, perhaps, can be seen as the next level above neuroscience, because psychology studies brains interacting with each other and with the environment. So this on this model, we have a kind of Great Chain of Science, something like this: This is an appealing model. But is biology really basic to neuroscience (and psychology)? At first glance it seems like biology most importantly cell and molecular biology surely is basic to neuroscience. After all, brains are comprised of cells. All of the functions of brain cells, like synaptic transmission and plasticity, are products of biological machinery, i.e. proteins and ultimately genes. This doesnt imply that neuroscience could be reduced to biology, any more than biology will ever be … Continue reading

Duke Flags Lowered: Biology Student Jerry (Bei) Sun Dies

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

Durham, NC - Jerry (Bei) Sun, a Duke University biology student, passed away Wednesday, March 4, from a rare form of cancer. Jerry was scheduled to graduate from Duke in 2016. Duke flags were lowered to half-mast in his honor. Jerry first came to Duke as a high school student at North Carolina School of Science and Math in Durham to do an independent study project in the Center for Biomedical and Tissue Engineering. The lab became an important part of his life at Duke. "Jerry came to us as a talented student with a deep interest in science. He was curious and bright, and learned complex materials quickly," said Jun Chen, associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, who oversaw his work both as a high school student, and subsequently as a Duke student beginning in the fall of 2012. "Jerry worked and thought creatively, and his contributions were equivalent to those of a junior graduate student." Jerry was diagnosed with a germ cell tumor this past spring. During his treatment, he expressed great thanks and wonder at the support he received from his friends and family. "You guys... I don't know even know where to begin," he wrote in a … Continue reading
