Be Wary of Websites Selling Genetic Cancer Tests: Study

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

THURSDAY, March 5, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Websites that offer personalized genetic cancer tests tend to overstate their supposed benefits and downplay their limitations, a new study says. And many sites offer tests that have not been proven to be useful in guiding cancer treatment, according to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute team that analyzed 55 such websites. She is a medical oncologist and investigator at the Dana-Farber Center for Outcomes and Policy Research in Boston. "We found a lot of variation. Some of the information is good, but all of it needs to be looked at critically by consumers and health care providers," she said. In general, "the benefits of these personalized cancer products are reported much more frequently than are the limitations," Gray said. The researchers also found that 88 percent of the websites offered one or more "nonstandard" tests that lacked evidence of having value in routine cancer care. The study was published March 5 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Some sites marketed tests of … Continue reading

Lower Gwynedd business hosting prom attire drive

Posted: Published on March 7th, 2015

Lower Gwynedd >> A local aesthetic and plastic surgery center is hoping to help teens lacking the financial resources to attend their prom get there in style. Philadelphia-based Strella MedSpa is hosting Operation Glass Slipper, a prom dress, tuxedo and accessories drive at its Lower Gywnedd location, 1108 N. Bethlehem Pike, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 19 and 20. The drive, a first for Strella MedSpa, will benefit Operation PROM, a nonprofit that has helped more than 40,000 students nationwide attend their prom for little to no cost since 2005. Operation PROM works with the Philadelphia School District to identify schools and students in the area to receive donations. Students must be recommended by their guidance counselor, have a passing grade in all their courses and meet financial aid requirements. Parents may also apply on behalf of their children. Local teens from suburban Philadelphia can also apply if they meet the eligibility requirements, Strella MedSpa spokeswoman Meredith Rovine said. The Philadelphia chapter of Operation PROM is based at Temple University, where the big shopping event will be held in April, Rovine said. The event is as close to a true shopping experience as it would be if the … Continue reading
