Lower Gwynedd business hosting prom attire drive

Lower Gwynedd >> A local aesthetic and plastic surgery center is hoping to help teens lacking the financial resources to attend their prom get there in style. Philadelphia-based Strella MedSpa is hosting Operation Glass Slipper, a prom dress, tuxedo and accessories drive at its Lower Gywnedd location, 1108 N. Bethlehem Pike, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 19 and 20. The drive, a first for Strella MedSpa, will benefit Operation PROM, a nonprofit that has helped more than 40,000 students nationwide attend their prom for little to no cost since 2005. Operation PROM works with the Philadelphia School District to identify schools and students in the area to receive donations. Students must be recommended by their guidance counselor, have a passing grade in all their courses and meet financial aid requirements. Parents may also apply on behalf of their children. Local teens from suburban Philadelphia can also apply if they meet the eligibility requirements, Strella MedSpa spokeswoman Meredith Rovine said. The Philadelphia chapter of Operation PROM is based at Temple University, where the big shopping event will be held in April, Rovine said. Stem cell research for medical purposes is okay, says Jakim Kuala Lumpur: Despite numerous religious debates on therapeutic cloning and stem cell research, the Malaysian Department of Islamic Development (Jakim) on Thursday stated that when it was done for medical purposes, this form of treatment was actually encouraged. A press statement issued by Jakim Thursday said following the 67th National Council Fatwa meeting on Feb 22, it was decided that medical treatment which replaces and recreates damaged cells and organs was encouraged as these were meant for the well-being of the people. "It is encouraged to use frozen or leftover embryos from in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) for research purposes, with the condition that the couple's consent is obtained before the embryos reach a blastocyst stage. "The main purpose of the therapeutic cloning is to save a human life; it produces non-foetal stem cells. "For Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, the stem cells are taken from the embryo to obtain tissues or organs meant to treat the patients that provide DNA."
