Stempeutics Receives US Process Patent for Its Novel Stem Cell Drug Stempeucel

India, Bengaluru (PRWEB) March 04, 2015 Stempeutics Research, a group company of Manipal Education and Medical Group and a Joint Venture with Cipla Group, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademarks Office (USPTO) granted a US process patent for its novel stem-cell based drug Stempeucel. Stempeucel will initially be used for the treatment of CLI and is a breakthrough treatment option which directly addresses the root cause of the disease, unlike other drugs which typically treat the symptoms and not the disease itself. Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) is a progressive form of peripheral arterial disease, which blocks the arteries in the lower extremities, resulting into reduction of the blood flow. It is a debilitating disease which affects patients with severe pain in the feet or toes. Insufficient supply of blood flow results into the development of sores and wounds in legs and feet. If left untreated, patients may finally have to undergo amputation of the affected limb as the last treatment option. In the US, the most common current treatments for CLI are characterized by high rates of primary amputations, multiple procedures and high rates of procedure-related complications. WEDNESDAY, March 4, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Eczema isn't just a painful, chronic problem for many -- it's a big drain on the pocketbook, too, a new study finds. Researchers at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago report that adults with eczema have higher health costs and more health care-related problems than those without the skin condition. That finding didn't surprise dermatologists. "When their skin is not properly managed and cared for, their disease may flare -- resulting in significant itch and discomfort, leading to a lack of sleep and decreased productivity at home and at work," explained Dr. Katy Burris, a dermatologist at North Shore-LIJ Health System in Manhasset, N.Y. About 10 percent of adults and nearly 11 percent of children in the United States have eczema, but there has been little research into the costs associated with the disease, according to the study authors. In the study, a team led by Dr. Jonathan Silverberg of Northwestern tracked data from more than 61,000 American adults. The researchers found that those with eczema paid more than $29.3 billion in out-of-pocket health care costs in 2012 alone.
