Activating genes on demand: Possible?

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

When it comes to gene expression -- the process by which our DNA provides the recipe used to direct the synthesis of proteins and other molecules that we need for development and survival -- scientists have so far studied one single gene at a time. A new approach developed by Harvard geneticist George Church, Ph.D., can help uncover how tandem gene circuits dictate life processes, such as the healthy development of tissue or the triggering of a particular disease, and can also be used for directing precision stem cell differentiation for regenerative medicine and growing organ transplants. The findings, reported by Church and his team of researchers at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and Harvard Medical School in Nature Methods, show promise that precision gene therapies could be developed to prevent and treat disease on a highly customizable, personalized level, which is crucial given the fact that diseases develop among diverse pathways among genetically-varied individuals. Wyss Core Faculty member Jim Collins, Ph.D., was also a co-author on the paper. Collins is also the Henri Termeer Professor of Medical Engineering & Science and Professor in the Department of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. … Continue reading

Vaccination is crucial to preventing cervical cancer

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

The number of people dying of cervical cancer in the world is now more than ever before, and health agencies should advise adolescent boys and girls to go in for proper vaccination to prevent them from contracting the disease, said Nobel Laureate Harald zur Hausen. While delivering a lecture on prevention of cancers linked to infections at the Indian Genetics Congress organised by the department of genetic engineering at SRM University, Kattankulathur, on Wednesday, he said, in cervical cancer, prevention had caused a significant decrease in the number of infections. In his address, M.S. Swaminathan, founder of M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, said there are three major dimensions of hunger calorie deprivation, protein deficiency and micronutrient deficiency. One way to overcome protein hunger is through a pulses revolution, he said. P. Sathyanarayanan, president of SRM University, called on the Centre to enhance funding for research and development in genetic engineering. Trilochan Mohapatra, director, Central Rice Research Institute, Bhubaneswar, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Swarup K. Parida and Amit Mitra of the National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi, received the young genetics researchers award. Please Wait while comments are loading... 1. Parkinson's centre given 6m to help it find cure by 2020

First published in News by Alex Regan, Reporter covering Headington and Marston. Call me on (01865) 425429 SCIENTISTS hope a potential cure for Parkinsons Disease could be developed in Oxford by 2020 after a research centre won 6m of extra funding. The Oxford Parkinsons Disease Centre (OPDC) has been given the money by national research charity Parkinsons UK. The cash will go towards research using brain cells to find new drugs to stunt the development of the disease, or even develop a cure for it in the next five years. Chief executive of Parkinsons UK Steve Ford said: This new research grant comes at the 50th anniversary of Levadopa, the main drug used to treat the symptoms of Parkinsons. For people who have Parkinsons, its quite frustrating that the main course of treatment is 50 years old. Our top stories The team at the OPDC are looking at new treatments and doing groundbreaking research to help patients and Oxford should be proud to have a world-leading research facility. The OPDC, based in South Parks Road, was set up in 2010 with a 5m grant from Parkinsons UK. Scientists have collected skin tissue from people, using stem cell technology to then … Continue reading

Home Books Author Jeanne Ryan discusses Charisma and gene therapy Author Jeanne Ryan talks with Hypable about her book Charisma and whether or not she would take her fictional drug if given the chance. Charisma follows the story of Aislyn, a painfully shy junior in high school who suffers from social anxiety. Speaking up in class and trying to have fun with her friends at a party are well outside her comfort zone. She finds out about a new underground gene therapy treatment in the form of a drug called Charisma. Aislyns personality completely changes, and suddenly shes exactly the person she wanted to be all along. But theres one problem. The therapy appears to be contagious and deadly. Worse yet, the doctor who gave her and a select number of other patients the drug suddenly disappears. Read our review. Tell us 5 random facts about yourself. Two of my brothers have the same name, kind of by accident. Just after my mom gave birth to her sixth kid in less than seven years, the nurse asked the name of her baby. Thinking the nurse meant the baby at home, my sleep-deprived mom gave her his name, and it ended … Continue reading

Neuropathy: Relief for diabetics with painful condition

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

Walking barefoot on sand "felt like walking on glass" for Keith Wenckowski, who has lived with type-one diabetes for more than two decades. One of the participants in a new Northwestern Medicine study who suffered from painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN), Wenckowski finally found relief from the constant foot pain that required him to wear shoes at all times, even to the beach. The study found that those with PDN who received two low dose rounds of a non-viral gene therapy called VM202 had significant improvement of their pain that lasted for months. "I can now go to a beach and walk on the sand without feeling like I am walking on glass," Wenckowski said. The results of this phase two, double-blind, placebo-controlled study will be published March 5 in the journal Annals of Clinical and Translation Neurology. Right now there is no treatment for this disease of the peripheral nerves that affects 20 to 25 percent of diabetics. Patients with the most extreme form of the disease feel intense pain with a slight graze or touch. The pain can interfere with daily activities, sleep, mood and can diminish quality of life. "Those who received the therapy reported more than a … Continue reading

MSMR Analysis Examines TBI and PTSD Diagnoses among Service Members from Active War Service and Increased Detection …

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise SILVER SPRING, MD, March 9, 2015 If Department of Defense expansion of military programs and resources for diagnoses and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) continues, incidence rates for both diseases in the post-war period will be much higher than in the pre-war period, according to a newly released health surveillance report. Higher incidence rates of diagnoses of PTSD and TBI were found in service members during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq because of the risks associated with service in those war zones, and also because of overall enhanced efforts to detect and diagnose cases, according to the report in the February issue of the Medical Surveillance Monthly Report published by the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center (AFHSC). Service members are at risk of TBI and PTSD even when the U.S. is not at war, said Navy Captain Kevin Russell, director of the AFHSC. Yes, the risk of those conditions rises greatly during war. However, enhanced efforts by the Department of Defense to detect, diagnose, and treat produced dramatic results even among service members without exposures to war zones. Continuation of those efforts in the post-war … Continue reading
