Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

Significantly advances Cardinal Health's offering of interventional cardiology and endovascular solutions for integrated health systems and their patients Creates immediate global scale and scope Fiscal 2017, first full post-close year, accretion is expected to be greater than $0.20 in non-GAAP diluted earnings per share from continuing operations; increasingly accretive thereafter DUBLIN, Ohio Cardinal Health today announced plans to acquire Johnson Johnson's Cordis business, a leading global manufacturer of cardiology and endovascular devices, for $1.944 billion in cash, or approximately $1.594 billion, net of the present value of tax benefits. The acquisition is expected to be financed with a combination of $1.0 billion in new senior unsecured notes and the remainder with existing cash. The transaction is expected to close in the United States and key non-U.S. countries towards the end of calendar 2015. Assuming this timing, Cardinal Health expects fiscal 2017 accretion in non-GAAP diluted earnings per share (EPS(1)) from continuing operations of greater than $0.20 per share, which includes the cost of an incremental $0.07-$0.08 per share of interest expense associated with financing the transaction. The company expects the acquisition to be increasingly accretive thereafter and assumes that synergies will exceed $100 million annually by the end of fiscal … Continue reading

Common Drug for Irregular Heartbeat Tied to Worse Outcomes

Posted: Published on March 6th, 2015

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, March 4, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Patients who take the heart rhythm drug digoxin may face a nearly 30 percent greater risk of death than patients not taking the drug, a review of prior research suggests. The analysis also suggests that digoxin may increase the risk for death by 60 to 70 percent among patients with both the heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation and kidney failure. The findings stem from an in-depth look at 19 studies involving nearly a half million atrial fibrillation patients, many of whom were prescribed digoxin (brand names: Digox, Lanoxin) as a way to rein in irregular heartbeats. "Between 15 to 20 percent of atrial fibrillation patients use this drug to control this disorder of the heart, which is very prevalent among older age groups," said study lead author Dr. Waqas Qureshi, a clinical and research fellow of cardiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, N.C. Currently, the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology include digoxin as a first-line therapy for the condition, he said. "We found a very strong signal that a significant portion of digoxin users faced an increased risk for … Continue reading
