Rochester chemistry teacher voices concerns over possible curriculum changes

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- One local chemistry teacher is voicing his concerns over potential changes to science class requirements within Rochester Public Schools. Chuck Handlon has taught chemistry for more than 30 years and currently teaches at Rochester's Century High School. He opposes recent discussions by the Rochester Public School Board aiming to potentially alter some required science classes for high school students. Instead of requiring biology, chemistry, and physics, the board has discussed requiring students to chose between biology, chemistry, and physics courses. Handlon claims this could potentially violate education statutes. "It's really important that we have a scientifically literate citizens. By reducing the standards, which were put there so that all students have these common experiences, it is going to result in students not being able to understand the science that they will have to be involved with," said Handlon. After Handlon made his public comments Tuesday night, Superintendent Michael Muoz emphasized that he did not believe the changes would violate any requirements currently in place. Chemistry teacher was ‘prepared to murder in Syria’

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

A teacher who was determined to fight in Syria despite desperate pleas from his family is "appalled" at the brutality shown by Islamic State, a judge has been told. Jamshed Javeed - who is facing jail after admitting two counts of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist acts - said he wanted to go and support the Syrian people in late 2013 and did not then know the truth about Islamic State. Describing his client as a "thoughtful, studious and mild-mannered" teacher, Charles Bott QC said Javeed was "deeply moved" by images of "extreme suffering" of Syrian people at the hands of the Assad regime. "The defendant's position is that he did something that he considered right at the time in very particular circumstances that he would not contemplate doing now," he told a sentencing hearing at Woolwich Crown Court. He said Javeed was "appalled at the indiscriminate brutality" of IS, describing a series of videos showing the murders of Western hostages as "grotesque and barbaric". A chemistry teacher who wanted to travel to Syria to fight with Islamic State was prepared to commit "multiple acts of murder", a court has heard. Jamshed Javeed, 30, who taught children aged … Continue reading

Researchers Discover Hurricanes Helped Accelerate Spread of Lionfish

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise FORT LAUDERDALE-DAVIE, Fla. Just when you thought hurricanes couldn't get any scarier, think again. Their names roll of the tongue like a rogues' gallery: Floyd, Frances, Irene, Wilma and Andrew. But these aren't the names of notorious criminals; rather, they are just a few of the hurricanes since 1992 that have helped spread invasive marine species throughout the Florida Straits. Researchers at Nova Southeastern University's (NSU) Oceanographic Center have discovered that storms don't only have a dramatic impact on land; they have an equally dramatic effect on ocean currents, which helps the spread of marine invasive species throughout a region. More specifically, NSU researchers looked at the distribution of lionfish in the Florida Straits. "This is the first-ever study that shows hurricane-altered ocean currents are able not only to help, but actually accelerate the invasion of non-native marine species of any kind," said Matthew Johnston, Ph.D., one of the research scientists at NSU's Oceanographic Center who conducted the study. "Lionfish are pretty sedentary, so this is like creating express lanes on a superhighway otherwise, that's a pretty long swim for lionfish babies." The research, conducted by Johnston and NSU Oceanographic Center Professor … Continue reading

Arthritis cure is on the way: Scientists make new breakthrough using embryonic stem cells

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

GETTY/PIC POSED BY MODEL Treatment for the crippling condition is currently limited to basic pain relief or complex joint replacement surgery. But trials using stem cells have shown astonishing results with tissue almost as good as new after just three months. Professor Sue Kimber, who led the research, said: This work represents an important step forward in treating cartilage damage using embryonic stem cells to form new tissue. It may offer a new line of therapy for people with crippling joint pain and we now need this process to be developed for patients. Osteoarthritis occurs when cartilage at the ends of bones wears away causing severe pain and stiffness. Researchers say the latest experiments show the procedure could potentially be a safe and effective treatment for more than eight million people who suffer from jointdamage and inflammation. In the experiments, led by teams at Manchester University and Arthritis Research UK, discarded embryonic stem cells from IVF clinics were transformed into cartilage cells. These were transplanted into rats with defective joints. Tests showed the high-quality artificially grown tissue quickly aided the repair of the joint. Behind the scenes of the world's first commercial stem-cell therapy

Posted: Published on March 4th, 2015

Contrasto/eyevine Biologist Graziella Pellegrini has worked on stem-cell therapy at four different Italian institutions, including a hospital run by priests. Last month saw a major landmark for regenerative medicine: the first time that a stem-cell therapy beside the use of cells extracted from umbilical cords had been cleared for sale by any regulatory agency in the world. The European Commission approved Holoclar for use in cases of blindness caused by burning. The achievement is all the more remarkable because Holoclar was developed by a small laboratory in Italy, a country better known for its lack of support for life sciences and for its recent tolerance of an unproven stem-cell concoction, marketed by the Stamina Foundation, that claimed to be a panacea for many diseases. Nature talked to Graziella Pellegrini from the University of Modena about how she and her colleagues overcame the many obstacles to take the therapy from bench to bedside. The surface of the cornea the transparent tissue that sits in front of the iris is constantly renewed in a healthy eye, to keep it smooth and clear. New corneal cells are generated from a niche of stem cells in the limbus, an area between the cornea and … Continue reading
