Behind the scenes of the world’s first commercial stem-cell therapy

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

Contrasto/eyevine Biologist Graziella Pellegrini has worked on stem-cell therapy at four different Italian institutions, including a hospital run by priests. Last month saw a major landmark for regenerative medicine: the first time that a stem-cell therapy beside the use of cells extracted from umbilical cords had been cleared for sale by any regulatory agency in the world. The European Commission approved Holoclar for use in cases of blindness caused by burning. The achievement is all the more remarkable because Holoclar was developed by a small laboratory in Italy, a country better known for its lack of support for life sciences and for its recent tolerance of an unproven stem-cell concoction, marketed by the Stamina Foundation, that claimed to be a panacea for many diseases. Nature talked to Graziella Pellegrini from the University of Modena about how she and her colleagues overcame the many obstacles to take the therapy from bench to bedside. The surface of the cornea the transparent tissue that sits in front of the iris is constantly renewed in a healthy eye, to keep it smooth and clear. New corneal cells are generated from a niche of stem cells in the limbus, an area between the cornea and … Continue reading

Biotechnology is a tool to beat food crisis

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

: Potential of biotechnology should be integrated into farming to augment food production, said M. Maheswaran, biotechnologist and director of research at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. Addressing a two-day national seminar on New Frontiers in Agricultural Bio-Technology at the Kerala Agricultural University, Mannuthy, on Tuesday, he stressed the need to explore advancements in biotechnology, especially plant breeding and genetics as well as plant protection disciplines to face the challenges of food crisis. Biotechnology should not be seen, learnt and practiced in isolation, but in tandem with other branches. Proper use of biotechnology tools is very vital. Scientists should strive to learn not only advanced technology but also to realise the right way to use them, he said. T.R. Gopalakrishnan, KAU director of research, in his presidential address highlighted the need to understand and practice modern technologies as scientific tools for enhancing and sustaining agricultural productivity. The self-sufficiency in food grain production in the country did not happen overnight. It happened because of a series of technological inputs like improved varieties, plant health management inputs and soil health management," he said. He opined that biotechnology has become an integral part of agricultural development. "The shift in cropping pattern, from high volume … Continue reading

Joint lessons: Orthopedic surgeons talk to Hamilton High School anatomy students

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

Hamilton High Schools anatomy and physiology class had two orthopedic surgeons talk with students about their profession and provide students with the hands-on experience of drilling plastic bones, placing screws and plates on Monday. Dr. Timothy Woods and Dr. Jeremiah Clinton of Bitterroot Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Marcus Daly Memorial hospital came to share their thoughts and experiences with students. Theyve been learning about muscular skeletal anatomy, and we let them drill holes in plastic bones and pretend that they are orthopedic surgeons, said Woods. It may solidify the practical aspects of what theyve been learning. Theyve been memorizing anatomic landmarks on a human skeleton. They may understand why that may be important if you link it to surgery in some way. I didnt have an opportunity like this when I was in school. I didnt know what was available in health care period, said Clinton. Thats the remarkable thing about health care classes and job fair opportunities they help students explore options. Many people who choose the medical profession have had a personal or family experience with the health profession as a patient. The anatomy and physiology class is taught by Marie Antonioli and is one of several … Continue reading

New Genetic Syndrome Found, Arising From Errors in ‘Master Switch’ During Early Development

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Philadelphia, March 2, 2015 Analyzing a puzzling multisystem disorder in three children, genetic experts have identified a new syndrome, shedding light on key biological processes during human development. The research also provides important information to help caregivers manage the disorder, and may offer clues to eventually treating it. This syndrome illuminates a very important pathway in early human developmenta sort of master switch that controls many other genes, said study leader Ian D. Krantz, M.D., co-director of the Individualized Medical Genetics Center at The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Krantz, a medical geneticist, is an attending physician in CHOPs comprehensive human genetics program. Krantz is the senior author of the study, published online today in Nature Genetics. His co-study leader is Katsuhiko Shirahige, Ph.D., of the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biosciences, University of Tokyo, also the home institution of first author Kosuke Izumi. The investigators named the disorder CHOPS syndrome, with the acronym representing a group of symptoms seen in the affected children: cognitive impairment and coarse facies (facial features), heart defects, obesity, pulmonary involvement, short stature and skeletal dysplasia (abnormal bone development). The central research finding is that mutations in … Continue reading
