Genetically Speaking, Mammals Are More Like Their Fathers

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise CHAPEL HILL, NC You might resemble or act more like your mother, but a novel research study from UNC School of Medicine researchers reveals that mammals are genetically more like their dads. Specifically, the research shows that although we inherit equal amounts of genetic mutations from our parents the mutations that make us who we are and not some other person we actually use more of the DNA that we inherit from our dads. The research, published in the journal Nature Genetics, has wide implications for the study of human disease, especially when using mammalian research models. For instance, in many mouse models created for the study of gene expression related to disease, researchers typically dont take into account whether specific genetic expression originates from mothers or fathers. But the UNC research shows that inheriting a mutation has different consequences in mammals, depending on whether the genetic variant is inherited from the mother or father. This is an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to an entirely new area of exploration in human genetics, said Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena, PhD, professor of genetics and senior author of the paper. Weve … Continue reading

Humans Are Genetically More Similar to Their Fathers, Study Finds

TIME Science Research Humans Are Genetically More Similar to Their Fathers, Study Finds Sorry mom Every parent wants their child to be just like them, but new research shows that dads may have an advantage at least from a genetic standpoint. According to a study by the University of North Carolinas School of Medicine and published in the journal Nature Genetics, mammals use more DNA from the father than the mother when undergoing mutations the genetic process that makes us who we are. The researchers, led by genetics professor and senior author Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena, tested the genetic mutations of specially crossbred mice to see which mutations altered gene expression. Of the 80% that did, several hundred genes showed a genome-wide expression imbalance in favor of the dad, first author James Crowley told Science Daily. This imbalance resulted in offspring whose brain-gene expression was significantly more like their fathers. The authors believe a similar bias would exist for human subjects. Pardo-Manuel de Villena called the results an exceptional new research finding that opens the door to an entirely new area of exploration in human genetics. Italy study finds HIV’s ‘hiding places’ – update

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

Trieste team's breakthrough could lead to new AIDS drugs (ANSA) - Trieste, March 2 - A group of researchers at Trieste's International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) has found the "dens" where HIV cells hide until they become "invisible". The breakthrough, which could lead to the development of new AIDS drugs, was made possible after the team, led by Professor Mauro Giacca, photographed the structure of HIV lymphoid cell nuclei. The study was published on Tuesday on the website of highly respected journal Nature. The AIDS virus manages to insert its DNA into the cells that it infects to become part of their genetic makeup. But up to now why the virus decides to combine with only some of the 20,000 human genes and how it manages to hide from medicines inside these genes had been a mystery. $500K bill for future medicine students

Posted: Published on March 3rd, 2015

New modelling shows babies born this year wanting to be doctors face medicine degrees over $500,000. Babies born this year who want to be doctors when they grow up could face a bill of more than $500,000 for their time at university, new modelling shows. That pricetag, in 2015 dollars, includes sharehouse rent paid during a six-year degree, university fees and other costs associated with studying like buying a computer and textbooks. The Australian Scholarships Group, which released the modelling on Tuesday, says someone who starts a six-year medicine degree in 2033 and lives away from home will pay $508,546. The cost is more than double what a medicine student in similar circumstances starting their degree this year would pay. ASG calculates university fees would rise from $70,325 for the six years starting now to $177,620 (in 2015 dollars) for a medicine degree started in 2033. A 2033 first year university student living at home would pay $267,875 over the lifetime of their degree. But ASG chief executive John Velegrinis points out it's not always possible for students to stay at home and reduce costs. "For students in regional Australia or those looking to travel interstate for further study, the … Continue reading
