Experts warn of stem cell underuse as transplants reach one million worldwide

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2015

However, the findings reveal striking variations between countries and regions in the use of this lifesaving procedure and high unmet need due to a chronic shortage of resources and donors that is putting lives at risk. HSCT (also known as blood and marrow transplant) is most often used to treat diseases of the blood and several types of cancer such as multiple myeloma or leukemia. For many people with these diseases the only possibility of a cure is to have a HSCT. The procedure provides healthy cells from either the patient (autologous transplantation) or from a healthy donor (allogeneic transplantation) to replace those lost to disease or chemotherapy. Using data collected by the Worldwide Network for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (WBMT), Professor Dietger Niederwieser from the University Hospital Leipzig in Germany and international colleagues, systematically analysed the growth of HSCT and changes in its use in 194 WHO member countries since the first transplant in 1957. They also examined the link between macroeconomic factors (eg, gross national income and health care expenditure) and transplant frequencies per 10 million inhabitants in each country. Although only a small number of centres had performed about 10000 transplants by 1985, this had risen to … Continue reading

The Lancet Haematology: Experts warn of stem cell underuse

Since the first experimental bone marrow transplant over 50 years ago, more than one million hematopoietic stem cell transplantations (HSCT) have been performed in 75 countries, according to new research charting the remarkable growth in the worldwide use of HSCT, published in The Lancet Haematology journal. However, the findings reveal striking variations between countries and regions in the use of this lifesaving procedure and high unmet need due to a chronic shortage of resources and donors that is putting lives at risk. Is Topical Botox the Next Big Thing?

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2015

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 27, 2015 On February 24 2015, Harpers Bazaar Magazine posted an online article titled The Real Liquid Botox, that details the development of RT001, a form of topical botulinum toxin type A that is working its way through FDA trials. For those afraid of needles, the idea of a topical Botox cream is very attractive. Of course, if the drug ultimately gets FDA approval it will be available only by prescription at a physicians office. (see: goo.gl/PQvQwk) As the article notes, the size of the Botox molecule has slowed the development of an effective topical delivery system," says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. Were still a long way from having this product available for use on patients. According to the Harpers Bazaar Magazine article, the Botox molecule is too big to penetrate the skin so the key to an effective topical cream is the peptide delivery system. Delivery of the Botox through the skin is not instant; the gel must be left on the skin for 30 minutes. According to one study, 89 percent of patients reported good results and no major side effects. If this delivery technology is effective for … Continue reading

Chatter Busy: Nicole Kidman Plastic Or Cosmetic Surgery

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2015

Theres no doubt that Nicole Kidman has touched up her face quite a bit over the years. As you flip through the pics below, notice how her face seems to tighten up around the year 2000. Maybe she got a facelift after observing her slightly aging face in her 1999 Vogue spread? And then theres the occasional baggy spot on her face when everything else is tight enough to bounce a quarter off of. Usually when you see that it means that a lesser amount of Botox was injected into those droopy parts than in the rest of the face and the treatment has worn off. Also, there is also quirky dent in her upper lip if you notice carefully. Well, sometimes its there and sometimes its not. That probably means shes been occasionally stuffing her lips with Restylane or another temporary filler. After acknowledging her Botox use , Nicole Kidman has now told a British magazine a tiny bit more about cosmetic treatments she went through before putting a halt to the wrinkle-smoothing injections. About Botox, she said in the British edition of Marie Claire: "I tried it, I didnt like it, so Ive gone back to my own … Continue reading

Non-Surgical Fat Reduction Procedures And Buttock Augmentation Dominate In 2014

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2015

NEW YORK, Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) is in the process of compiling its procedural statistical data for the 2014 calendar year, which has already started to reveal distinct trends in the world of aesthetic plastic surgery. Due to significant technological advances in the cosmetic field, nonsurgical fat reduction procedures rose 43% in the past year. This is the first time that more than 100,000 such procedures were performed in one year since ASAPS started tracking it. In addition, the number of buttock augmentations, still a relatively new procedure, rose by a staggering 86% in just 12 months. Michael Edwards MD, President of ASAPS states, "Nonsurgical fat reduction is a new frontier in the realm of cosmetic procedures. The rise in its popularity is indicative of the public's desire for nonsurgical alternatives in lieu of their invasive counterparts. Due to the technological advancement and efficacy of nonsurgical fat reduction devices, it's not surprising that more people are opting to freeze or melt away stubborn body fat in the comfort of their surgeon's office as opposed to undergoing surgery; however it must be noted the results aren't the same. Not everyone is a candidate … Continue reading
