New Commentary from Asymmetrex LLC Director Anticipates Forthcoming E-Book on Stem Cell Genetic Fidelity

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 25, 2015 Anyone familiar with the founding principles of Asymmetrex, LLC will appreciate the new editorial from its director and the collection of authors he assembled as Associate Editor for the Frontiers Research Topic, titled Stem Cell Genetic Fidelity. Both the introductory editorial and the individual articles are currently available online, ahead of issue in the form of the Frontiers e-book later this year. Central to the stem cell mechanisms investigated and reviewed by the nine articles is the still controversial proposal of immortal strands in adult tissue stem cells. Based on the experimental observations of K. Gordon Lark in the 1960s, John Cairns predicted the existence of immortal strands of the DNA genetic material about a decade later. In studies with cultured mouse tissues and plant root tips, Lark had noted that when some cells divided, they seemed to violate well-established genetic laws. These were the Mendelian laws of inheritance, name after Gregor Mendel, who laid their foundation. Each of the 46 human chromosomes has two complementary strands of DNA. One DNA strand is older than the other, because it was used as the template for copying the other. As a result of this inherent … Continue reading

Biology teachers: Understanding faith, teaching evolution not mutually exclusive

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Discussing the relationship between science and faith, rather than avoiding the discussion, may better prepare future high school biology teachers for anticipating questions about evolution, according to Penn State political scientists. In a series of focus group meetings with biology students at four Pennsylvania institutions -- three universities and a college -- students from a Catholic college appeared to be more reflective when talking about issues of faith and science. "We suspect these students are somewhat less anxious around discussions of faith and science that come up in biology classes," said Michael Berkman, professor of political science and director of the Center for American Political Responsiveness. Students at religious colleges often receive instruction in theology and attend lectures that integrate discussions about faith, Berkman said. While this may help ease anxiety if religious issues come up in class discussions and talks with concerned parents, it is ultimately knowledge of the science of evolution that will provide biology teachers with the confidence for effective science instruction, he added. "If you don't have confidence in your own self-knowledge, especially in a controversial topic, your tendency is going to be to shy away from it, to avoid controversy and to not really teach … Continue reading

How much do college degrees matter in the 2016 election?

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was 34 credits away from graduating when he dropped out of Marquette University. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, while a medical doctor, never finished his undergraduate biology degree at Baylor University before he headed to Duke's medical school. And while Walker's and Paul's higher education credentials--or lack thereof--have drawn intense media scrutiny as November 2016 approaches, these Republican politicians' college education reflects the reality for nearly three-quarters of voting Americans. But unlike the rest of the general electorate, these men are also top contenders for the nation's highest executive office. According to a recent CBS news poll, 30 percent of Republicans would support Walker, and another third would consider voting for Rand Paul. Play Video Controversial remarks made last week by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani have shaken up the race for the Republican presidential nominati... Examining Walker's chances of winning a GOP primary, CBS News' John Dickerson points out that the lack of a college degree "clearly hasn't slowed his career." In fact, certain stories from Walker's life position the governor to campaign on the national stage as a political average Joe. "Running against the elites who all have post-graduate degrees is always a … Continue reading

Mouthguards Gather New Information That May Lead to More Accurate Prediction of Traumatic Brain Injury

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise A preliminary study conducted by researchers funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) may improve our prediction of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Every year more than 40 million people worldwide suffer from mTBI(1). 3.8 million concussions occur in the US each year during sports and recreation alone(2). Most often mTBI affects competitive athletes in contact sports, as well as soldiersthose with jobs where repeated jolts and impacts can cause the brain to move inside the skull with enough force to cause damage. However, recent research has shown that even those playing sports not usually considered contact sports such as baseball, as well as amateur athletes, are suffering from neurodegenerative diseases that seem consistent with mTBI. The problem is that while some patients with mTBI experience a loss of consciousness or concussion at the time of the injury, many do not. This can mean that those who have mTBI may not immediately realize the extent of their injury since the appearance of symptoms can occur hours or even days later. Others may feel some symptoms earlier, but do not report them because they do not want to be … Continue reading

Grey's Anatomy : What's next for Amelia and Owen?

Posted February 25 2015 8:30 PM EST It finally happened: During last weeks episode of Greys Anatomy, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) shared their first kiss. Though fans had suspected Greys would go this route after executive producer Shonda Rhimes first hinted towards the pairing last summer, the big moment came after a slow burn of subtle moments between the duo, like Owen comforting Amelia in the chapel as April (Sarah Drew) faced losing her childsomething Amelia also experienced during her tenure on Private Practice. However, Rhimes cautions that Amelia has bigger things to deal withlike Dr. Hermans (Geena Davis) upcoming intense brain surgeryso a relationship isnt on the forefront of her mind. We have other stories to tell, Rhimes says. It doesnt have anything to do with being kissed. It has a lot to do with Amelia as a surgeon, [and] that is some of my favorite story. But that does not mean that we are not also telling the story of Owen and Amelias affections for each other. Greys Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
