House of Lords set to vote of three-parent babies

GETTY After more than three hours of debate, the House of Lords this evening voted to approve an amendment to the 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act. The amendment will permit the use of controversial procedures, aimed at preventing serious inherited mitochondrial diseases. The treatment called mitochondrial transfer has also become known as "three-parent" in vitro fertilisation (IVF). This is because the babies, born from genetically modified embryos, would have DNA from a mother, a father and from a female donor. It is designed to help families with mitochondrial diseases, incurable conditions passed down the maternal line that affect around one in 6,500 children worldwide. A spokesperson for the Department of Health said: "Parliament's decision will bring hope to hundreds of families affected by mitochondrial disease. "We are proud to be the first country to allow these revolutionary techniques. "For the first time ever, women who carry severe mitochondrial disease will have the opportunity to have healthy babies without the fear of passing on devastating genetic disorders." ‘Three parent’ Newcastle University medical technique is given go ahead by House of Lords

A pioneering medical technique developed in Newcastle to create babies using DNA from three different people has been given the final go-ahead. The House of Lords passed the amendment to the 2008 Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act and permit the controversial procedure, aimed at preventing serious inherited mitochondrial diseases. It means the UK has become the first country in the world to legalise the creation of IVF babies using the technique. The mitochondrial transfer technique has been developed by medics at Newcastle University, and its research was partly inspired by a North East family, who today welcomed the result. MPs, including all three main party leaders, voted earlier this month in the Commons to legalise the technique, which critics have claimed will lead to three-parent babies. The new method - which was legalised in June 2013 would take genetic material from a mother, father and a donor woman to prevent deadly diseases. Now, the first baby conceived with the Tyneside treatment could be born as early as next year. The same study also showed that yeast used to brew the perfect lager can also be pressed into service to produce excellent stout. A research effort to build a comprehensive family tree of yeasts is under way, involving researchers from Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. It even sampled naturally occurring yeasts in the wild. There are two main groups of yeasts used to brew lager, and the researchers found that one of them shares DNA with the yeasts used to make stout. But this DNA is also shared by a yeast strain used to brew Toddy, a speciality from southern India. The research had uncovered new links between stout, ale and lager yeasts, said Prof Ursula Bond, associate professor in microbiology at Trinity. The House of Lords voted Tuesday to approve the use of a groundbreaking and controversial in-vitro fertilization technique known as three-parent IVF. That followed a similar vote in the House of Commons earlier this month. The technique would likely only be used in about a dozen cases a year in the U.K. involving women with faulty mitochondria, the energy-producing structures outside a cell's nucleus. The genetic flaw can cause devastating inherited conditions in a woman's offspring including muscular dystrophy, mental retardation, and problems affecting the baby's heart and other vital organs. To prevent that, scientists remove the nucleus DNA from the mother's egg and insert it into a donor egg from which the nucleus DNA has been removed. Retired Sioux City chemistry professor unveils flavor-changing beverage

SIOUX CITY | A retired chemistry professor from Sioux City has developed a new beverage technology that allows consumers to change the flavor of a drink with each sip. Larry Martin demonstrated his patent-pending product, called Shaka, at the Journal offices Tuesday. He poured small packets of chocolate- and strawberry-flavored Shaka milk into a glass of low-fat white milk. The three flavors didn't dissolve, but remained separate from each other, with a horizontal stack of solid bands of white, chocolate and strawberry. Martin then shook the liquid. The flavors didn't blend together, but the movement formed tiny balls, or globules, of various sizes and colors floating around the glass, similar to the appearance of a lava lamp. The name Shaka, pronounced (Shey-KA), refers to how users can easily change the drink to their liking. The more you shake, the more numerous and smaller the globules become.
