Mercy plans to consolidate several facilities in Oregon

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2015

Published: Saturday, 2/21/2015 - Updated: 39 seconds ago BY MARLENEHARRIS-TAYLOR BLADE STAFF WRITER Oregon residents will soon have a new medical facility that combines several services on one campus. Mercy Health system and its partner, the Toledo Clinic and Toledo Cardiology Consultants, will build a $9.7 million medical office building next to the Mercy Oregon Clinic, 3841 Navarre Ave. It provides a setting where folks can go to physicians office and under the same roof get rehabilitation services and imaging services. No one right now has them under one roof unless you go to one of the hospitals. It creates a one-stop shop for patients, said Jeff Dempsey, president and chief operating office at Mercy St. Charles Hospital. Mercy took over the Oregon Clinic last year and already owned the adjacent land to it, so it makes sense to build right there, Mr. Dempsey said. Mercy St. Charles rehabilitation services, now at 1001 Isaac Streets Dr., will move to the new two-story, 40,000-square-foot building. The Toledo Clinic also will move the small satellite office it operates in Oregon and assign a kidney doctor to the site, Mr. Dempsey said. Toledo Cardiology Consultants, which has operated a part-time office in Oregon … Continue reading

Bakar Fellows research could make blue jeans green

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2015

Who doesnt like blue jeans? Theyre practically wrinkle-proof. The indigo dye that provides their distinctive color holds up to detergents, but ages into that soft, worn look. No wonder the average American wears jeans four days a week. No wonder its a $66 billion a year industry, with three billion pairs of jeans manufactured each year. Indigo is one of the oldest dyes used for coloring textiles. For thousands of years it was extracted from tropical plants in Asia, the Middle East and the Americas. An indigo-dyed garment discovered in a Thebes excavation dates back to 2500 B.C. Commercial synthesis of indigo dye replaced the plant source around 1900. Today, the jean industry uses about 40,000 tons of indigo a year. But there is a dark side. Industrial synthesis of indigo from petroleum is a dirty chemical process. Chemical production of indigo into an effective dye requires a chemical that becomes toxic to fish and some other aquatic life. And when sent to waste water treatment plants, it severely corrodes the piping. Jeans manufacturers are interested in finding a cleaner route to produce the iconic dye. Berkeley bioengineering professor John Dueber has studied the chemical steps plants use to naturally … Continue reading

The Genetics of Being Injury-Prone

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2015

Researchers are beginning to understand how DNA makes some athletes more likely to get hurt. Injury is a fact of life for most athletes, but some professionalsand some weekend warriors, for that matterjust seem more injury-prone than others. But what is it about their bodies that makes the bones, tendons, and ligaments so much more likely to tear or strainbad luck, or just poor preparation? A growing body of research suggests another answer: that genetic makeup may play an important role in injury risk. A review article recently published in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine emphasizes that research on the genetics of sports injuries holds great potential for injury prevention for athletes at every level. The authors, from Stanford Universitys department of developmental biology and genetics, believe that genetic testing also gives athletes valuable information that might increase their competitive edge. Stuart Kim, one of the studys authors and a professor of genetics at Stanford, says his interest in sports injuries began almost by accident. I initially intended to study the genes associated with the large size of NFL lineman, but the athletes werent really interested in finding out the genetic reasons why they were so big, Kim says. … Continue reading
