New growth factor indicates possible regenerative effects in Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

Researchers have long sought treatments that can slow the progression of Parkinson's disease. Current treatments have for decades been only symptomatic in nature, supplying the neurotransmitter dopamine, which the dying nerve cells can no longer produce. Results from a recent clinical study offer hope that future therapies could take advantage of the brain's own protective mechanisms to limit neuronal cell death and restore dopamine production to natural levels. Researchers at Lund University and Karolinska Institutet have, in a first-in-human clinical study with twelve participating patients, applied a growth factor to the brain with the hope of preserving dopaminergic cells and fibers. The growth factor, PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor), has previously demonstrated, in studies in animals with Parkinson-like symptoms, reparative effects on both neurons and nerve fibers, while also leading to improved motor skills. The results of the current study in patients show that applying the growth factor does not cause any serious unresolvable side effects. Perhaps even more encouraging are the images of the patients' brains, produced four months after the delivery of the growth factor. Using a PET scanner, researchers have seen that in patients who received the growth factor the signaling of dopamine not only stayed at the … Continue reading

DNA-damage causes immune reaction, inflammation; linked to cancer development

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

For the first time scientists from Ume University show the importance of DNA damage in fine tuning of our innate immune system and hence the ability to mount the optimal inflammatory response to infections and other biological dangers. The study is published on 17th February in the journal Immunity (CellPress). The research group of Nelson Gekara within the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) at Ume University is interested in understanding how the innate immune system, our first line of defense is regulated and how defects in the immune system contribute to infectious and inflammatory diseases. Our immune system does not lie idle waiting to be attacked before it responds. Even in the absence of infections, our immune system is in a constant state of alert. Among the immune mediators that are constantly produced at low levels and which keep our immune system awake are a group of factors called type I interferon. A very delicate balance in the production of type I interferons is essential for health: insufficient production results in susceptibility to viral infections, while excessive production normally leads to autoimmune/inflammatory diseases. One of the questions Gekaras lab has been studying is aimed to understand the signaling … Continue reading

Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority – Wikipedia …

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department of Health. It is a statutory body that regulates and inspects all UK clinics providing in vitro fertilisation, artificial insemination and the storage of human eggs, sperm or embryos. It also regulates Human Embryo research. After the birth of Louise Brown, the world's first IVF baby, there was inevitably some concern about the implications of this new technology. In 1982, the government brought together a committee chaired by philosopher Mary Warnock to look into the issues and see what action needed to be taken. Hundreds of interested individuals and organisations gave evidence to the committee from doctors, scientists and health organisations to patient and parent organisations and religious groups. The final report has been much admired around the world for the depth and delicacy of its consideration of these very controversial and emotive issues.[citation needed] In the years following the Warnock report,[1] proposals were brought forward by the government in the publication of a white paper Human Fertilisation and Embryology: A Framework for Legislation in 1987. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990[2] was drafted from this. The 1990 Act provided for the establishment … Continue reading
