New Insights into 3D Genome Organization and Genetic Variability

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise While genomics is the study of all of the genes in a cell or organism, epigenomics is the study of all the genomic add-ons and changes that influence gene expression but arent encoded in the DNA sequence. A variety of new epigenomic information is now available in a collection of studies published Feb. 19 in Nature by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Roadmap Epigenomics Program. This information provides a valuable baseline for future studies of the epigenomes role in human development and disease. Two of these studies, led by researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Ludwig Cancer Research, address the differences between chromosome pairs (one inherited from mom, the other from dad) and how chromosome folding influences gene expression. Both of these studies provide important considerations for clinicians and researchers who are developing personalized medicines based on a patients genomic information, said Bing Ren, PhD, professor of cellular and molecular medicine at UC San Diego, Ludwig Cancer Research member and senior author of both studies. The first paper by Rens group takes a look at differences in our chromosome pairs. Each of us inherits one set … Continue reading

Chemistry graduate to research green alternatives

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

A Victoria University of Wellington chemistry graduate has joined forces with her former PhD supervisor to create safer and more stable natural hair dye, and help preserve handmade paper from China. Dr Ying Tang, who graduated with a PhD in Chemistry in 2011 and is now an Associate Professor at the Beijing Technology and Business University (BTBU) in China, will use sunlight to compare naturally made hair dyes and paper to their chemical-based alternatives. In collaboration with Dr Gerald Smith from Victorias School of Chemical and Physical Sciences and Dr Jolon Dyer from AgResearch, the research team will carry out two projects simultaneously-the first assessing damage caused by frequent chemical hair dyeing and finding a suitable natural option. Dr Tang says there is a large market for hair dye, especially in China, but there are some health concerns. "When Asian peoples hair turns grey, there is a cultural desire to slow and reverse this sign of ageing. This creates a huge demand for black or dark brown hair dye. Frequent dyeing causes many problems and toxicity concerns, so were trying to find a safe and stable dye that can be used instead of chemical synthetic dyes." Using dyed human hair, … Continue reading

She studied at the University at Buffalo, where she earned a masters degree in education and certification in chemistry, biology and physics in 1985. Mrs. Riordan, who taught chemistry at Clarence High School for more than 20 years, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in August 2013. She was a finalist for the New York State Teacher of the Year in 2005 and was honored as Teacher of the Year by the Western New York Chapter of the American Chemical Society in 2007. A test writer for the New York State Regents chemistry examination, she also wrote a chemistry textbook, Physical Setting: Chemistry, which will be published this August. Chemistry loss agriculture’s gain

Posted: Published on February 18th, 2015

Graeme Robertson. A chance conversation at university in the 1960s put Graeme Robertson on a career path that would ultimately change the face of the agriculture industry in WA. Without knowing the impact he would have on thousands of WA farmers in a career spanning more than 40 years, Dr Robertson turned his back on a life as a chemist in favour of agricultural science. "I had fairly good marks in science, but I hated the indoors. I was standing at the back of a queue at university with a mate, Kevin Goss, and we were both leaning towards chemistry," he said. "Someone handed us a brochure about doing science outdoors, so I enrolled in agriculture straight away, having never really been on a farm." After graduating, Dr Robertson was sent to Merredin as a wheat and sheep adviser before being awarded a coveted Rhodes scholarship. "I went to Oxford in 1971 for my doctorate in plant physiology for three years," he said. "But when I returned to the department I decided I didn't want a career in plant science, so my first job back in WA was working with Bill Bowden and David Bennett on the economics of how … Continue reading
