Grey's Anatomy: Sarah Drew Breaks Down April's "Painful" Decision

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2015

R.I.P. Samuel Norbert Avery. On Thursday's episode of Grey's Anatomy, April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) got the news they had been dreading: that their unborn baby tested positive for Type II osteogenesis imperfecta, meaning that he would almost surely die shortly after being born, and that his bones might even be already breaking inside April's womb. And so, the couple makes the heartbreaking decision to induce an early labor, to spare their son any further pain and so that they can spend at least a few minutes holding the baby before he died. April prays for a miracle, Jackson braces himself for the inevitable, and the situation basically plays out exactly how Dr. Hermann (Geena Davis) had warned them it would. VIDEO: Grey's Anatomy's Sarah Drew reveals the real-life inspiration behind April's baby story line Before she induces, April confesses that the situation has shaken her faith to its core. After trying to decide on a name with Jackson (the scene where they reference not wanting their son to get picked on at school is a real gut-punch), and later bonding with a woman who lost her husband in a car accident, April settles on Samuel. And so, … Continue reading

'Grey's Anatomy' Season 11: Episode 12 Synopsis Released Online; What Will Happen In The Great Pretender?

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2015

How could Greys Anatomy possibly follow up episode 11s heartbreaking installment? Well, according to the Season 11 synopsis for episode 12, the writers of the hit ABC medical drama found a way through a little comedic relief. The Great Pretender, named after the hit Platters single, will use sex to help transition the show from the tragic death of April (Sarah Drew) and Jacksons (Jesse Williams) newborn baby. And it looks like all your favorite characters will be participating in next weeks sensual story line. The promo for episode 12 teases that Jo (Camilla Luddington) will be dropping trou or should we say scrubs? in front of the recently single Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). Im down for whatever happens, Alex (Justin Chambers) says in the preview, giving the blond-haired doctor a sly smile. Dr. Herman (Geena Davis) will also be doing a bit of seductive work herself in the upcoming installment as she attempts to try out the new couch with Owen (Kevin McKidd). We can all agree that Herman is using code words for intercourse, right? But not everyone will be getting their fill of pleasure in episode 12. According to reports, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) will be anything but satisfied … Continue reading

Bionic eyes offering better sight to blind

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2015

By Lisa M. Krieger lkrieger@mercurynews.com A brighter ray of hope is on the horizon for the blind, as scientists improve electronic hardware that creates sight -- making it possible, they predict, to read printed text, recognize faces and lead normal, independent lives. At the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference in San Jose, researchers on Friday described innovations in bionic vision, such as prototype prosthetics, "smart glasses" and telescopic contact lenses -- all potential advances of today's artificial retinas, which produce only sketchy, high-contrast imagery. "Retinal implants have moved from sci-fi into reality over the last few years," said Daniel Palanker, physicist and professor of ophthalmology at Stanford University. He is working on a retinal prosthesis that works like solar panels on a roof, converting light from goggles into electric current to trigger signals in the retina which then flow to the brain. "Now we are in the race of improving resolution, improving image processing, dynamic range (of light intensity) and levels of gray -- and will keep improving," he said. For people like Palo Alto attorney Dean Lloyd, improvements are long overdue. With his 7-year-old implants, made by the Sylmar biotech company Second Sight Medical Products Inc., … Continue reading

Ulcerative Colitis: Causes, Symptoms & Treatments

Posted: Published on February 15th, 2015

Ulcerative Colitis Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in which the lining of the large intestine (colon or bowel) and the rectum become inflamed. This inflammation produces tiny sores or ulcers on the lining of the colon. It usually begins in the rectum and spreads upward. It rarely affects the small intestine beyond the lower portion. The inflammation causes the bowel to move bowel contents rapidly and empty frequently. As cells on the surface of the lining of the bowel die, ulcers (open sores) form. The ulcers may cause bleeding and discharge of mucus and pus. This disease affects people of all ages. Symptoms tend to develop when people are between the ages of 15 and 30, or between the ages of 50 and 70. The cause of this condition is not known. Researchers no longer believe that it is caused by stress. Today, research focuses on the immune system and heredity for possible causes. Most people with ulcerative colitis dont have a family history of the condition. However, you are more likely to develop it if a close family member also has the condition. Ulcerative colitis can develop in a person of any race, but it is … Continue reading
