Compound found in broccoli may help treat children with autism

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- Autism spectrum disorder affects one in 68 children in the U.S. There is no cure, but there is a promising new treatment being studied, and it comes from that veggie mom told us to eat as kids, broccoli. Ryan Dwelley was a happy, normally developing baby. "He'd speak in full sentences, he was clever and he was playful," said Sharon Dwelley, Ryans mother. At 27 months old he changed after a bug bite sent him to the hospital with hives. "He went from typically developing, talking, to not making eye contact, said Sharon. Not really using his language." Ryan's pediatrician diagnosed him with autism. "It's been hard, said Sharon. For him and for us." His family tried medications, diet, but nothing seemed to help. Then everything changed when Sharon found out about a new study. "It was unbelievable, said Sharon. I noticed immediately that he had the decrease in his vocalizations." Therapists certified in Parkinson's treatment

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

Physical therapists and speech language pathologists at Nash Day Hospital recently were trained and certified in an evidence-based treatment approach for people with Parkinsons disease. The two-day training and certification workshops, known as LSVT BIG for physical therapists and LSVT LOUD for speech language pathologists, are designed to train rehabilitation therapists in the treatment of Parkinsons disease and other neurological disorders. The training helps them educate and assist patients and their families in how to better manage the disease and improve their quality of life. Physical therapists Caitlin McKisson and Marcy Carlini received their LSVT LOUD certifications and speech language pathologists LaShawn Elam and Tina Campbell received their LSVT BIG certifications. Their attendance was funded by a grant from the National Parkinsons Foundation. Campbell said that a tremor in one hand, arm or foot may be the first and most noticeable symptom of Parkinsons, but the disease has many symptoms. These include softer, sometimes slurred speech and a change in gait going from a normal walk to a rigid shuffle with less arm swinging. LSVT BIG for physical therapists focuses on improving movement, balance and walking by utilizing movements perceived by the patient as exaggerated, but appearing normal to others. … Continue reading

South Carolina Accident Attorneys at McGowan, Hood and Felder, LLC Comment on Brain Injury Study

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) February 14, 2015 South Carolina personal injury attorney S. Randall Hood of McGowan, Hood and Felder, LLC, today said any number of accidents may have dire consequences and result in the need for brain injury treatment, but a recent study may come as a relief to parents whose children suffer blunt head trauma. According to a Reuters report published by Scientific American, children who sustain minor blunt head trauma and then complain of headache and show no other symptoms have little risk of a clinically important brain injury (Scientific American, Feb. 4, 2015, Isolated Headache after Bump Poses Little Brain Injury Risk for Kids). The study was published in Pediatrics on Feb. 2, 2015 (Pediatrics, Headache in Traumatic Brain Injuries From Blunt Head Trauma). The doctor who led the study at New York Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Childrens Hospital noted that a period of observation may be warranted before CT (computed tomography scans) decision-making, according to Scientific American. Hood, an experienced Rock Hill, SC attorney at McGowan, Hood and Felder LLC, said his firm has handled cases involving brain injury therapy and urges parents to have their children checked by a doctor if the child suffers some kind … Continue reading

Bristol Rugby star gets treatment for concussion at Bradley Stoke MS centre

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

BRISTOL Rugby star Olly Robinson has been treated for concussion at a Multiple Sclerosis centre in Bradley Stoke. The Bristol Rugby flanker attended the West of England MS Therapy Centre on Thursday, February 5 for oxygen treatment which speeds up the healing process of a head injury. Robinson was injured during Bristols game against the Cornish Pirates on Sunday, February 1. Oxygen treatment involves sitting in a pressurised chamber where patients breathe in 100 per cent pure oxygen through a mask. The benefits of the treatment vary from person to person, however it can improve cognitive function, eyesight, pain and inflammation and a variety of other symptoms. Members of the centre believe that oxygen treatment makes their neurological conditions more manageable, which leads to fewer visits to GPs and hospitals. My granddad had Multiple Sclerosis, said Olly Robinson. Hes passed away now, but it would have been a great facility for him to have used. I think its fascinating to see what happens at the Centre. Ive never heard of this place before I came here, however the service is amazing. When I started on Tuesday I was getting headaches and now they have stopped. When I come out of … Continue reading
