Hormone replacement therapy raises new cancer concern

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

Hormone replacement therapy can be administered through a skin patch or pill. istockphoto Most women in menopause who opt to take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to manage symptoms that the "change of life" brings know there are risks that come with these drugs. While the hormones --synthetic estrogen and progestin -- can work magic to stop hot flashes, decades of research has identified a strong link between HRT and conditions such as heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. Now a new large scale study may add ovarian cancer to this list. An analysis of 52 studies involving 21,488 women, published Thursday in The Lancet, finds even short-term use of these drugs correlated with a higher risk for ovarian cancer -- as much as 40 percent higher than women who don't take hormones. The study is based on all prior research that investigates the connection. "This is the first big study like this to really come out and say ovarian cancer is an issue," Dr. Taraneh Shirazian, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science and a minimally invasive gynecological surgeon, told CBS News. "So far, really, we've only been talking about breast cancer and blood clots." The study found … Continue reading

Study Ties Hormone Therapy to Increased Ovarian Cancer Risk

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

By Kathleen Doheny HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, Feb. 12, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Women who use hormone therapy after menopause -- even for just a few years -- may have an increased risk of ovarian cancer, according to new research. The new study found that when women used hormone replacement therapy for less than five years after menopause, the risk of ovarian cancer increased by about 40 percent. "We have evidence, proof, that there is a small but real excess risk of cancer of the ovaries with hormone therapy use," said study researcher Sir Richard Peto, professor of medical statistics and epidemiology at the University of Oxford, in England. Peto said the increased risk was significant from a statistical standpoint but emphasized that the risk is a small one. It would mean that for women who take hormone therapy for five years from around age 50, one extra ovarian cancer diagnosis for every 1,000 users would be expected, and one extra ovarian cancer death for every 1,700 users, the study found. It's also important to note that the current study wasn't designed to definitively show a cause-and-effect relationship between hormone replacement therapy and ovarian cancer. However, Peto and his colleagues contend … Continue reading

Cancer Patients Rarely Demand Unnecessary Tests and Treatments, According to Penn Medicine Study

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

PHILADELPHIA Physicians often blame patient demands for contributing to high medical costs, however, a new study involving more than 5,000 patient-clinician visits indicates that cancer patients rarely push for unnecessary tests and treatments from their health care providers. The study, conducted by Ezekiel Emanuel, MD, PhD and colleagues in the Abramson Cancer Center and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and published in the inaugural issue of JAMA Oncology, examined a total of 5,050 patient-clinician encounters, and found that 440 (8.7 percent) of those included a patient demand or request for a medical intervention. Clinicians complied with 365 of the demands they deemed clinically appropriate. However, of the 50 demands requesting clinically inappropriate tests or treatments, clinicians only complied with seven (0.14 percent of the 5,050 encounters). About half of the requests (49.1 percent) were for imaging studies, 13.6 percent were for laboratory tests such as tumor markers, and 5.2 percent were for genetic tests or chemosensitivity tests. Surprisingly, 15.5 percent of patient demands or requests were for palliative care interventions, such as pain medications and sleeping aides. Just 3.6 percent of patient demands or requests were for chemotherapy, and less than one percent for expensive … Continue reading

76-year-old Cedar Hills man creates great art despite being blind By Arianne Brown, KSL.com Contributor February 13th, 2015 @ 10:31am CEDAR HILLS Bert Eastmond, 76, reached into his drawer of art supplies, picked out a dark blue tile, and carefully carved it into a small rectangle. He then grouted it and placed it amid other blue tiles, completing the night sky above Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus in his mosaic depiction of the Nativity. He ran his hands over the tiles, to make sure each was in place, and when they were, he held it up for his oldest son, Mark, to see. It looks perfect, Dad, he said. Mark then gently took the mosaic from his dad so that he could frame it for others to see. Bert, however, would never have the chance to see his artwork he is blind. At the age of 16, Bert Eastmond, who was also born with a 70 percent hearing loss, was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition, called retinitis pigmentosa, and was told that it would be a matter of years before his sight would be completely gone. Devastated, but not defeated, Eastmond went on to serve a two-year LDS … Continue reading

'Gold dust' donor found for young dad

Posted: Published on February 14th, 2015

A father of two is completely over the moon after receiving the news that a stem cell match has been found for him. Jaso Manokaran, a 29-year-old from Harrow, described potential donors as being like gold dust after a shock cancer diagnosis left him relying upon a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. After being rushed to hospital due to constant pain and fever-like symptoms, Jaso who is a Sri Lankan Tamil - was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in December and faced an uphill battle to find a match on the Anthony Nolan register. His wife Jasmini, who signed up to the register herself, kick-started the Help Save Jaso campaign to recruit more Sri Lankan donors to the register. Following weeks of campaigning to get more Sri Lankan Tamils to sign up, Jaso has defied all odds and found himself a stem cell match. Jasmini said: When the consultant told us they had a match for Jaso it was just amazing news. We were so happy, completely over the moon. The consultant told us how rare it is to find a match for a Sri Lankan so Jaso feels like the luckiest man thats ever lived. "Words cannot … Continue reading
