Christopher Abernathy (center) is released from the Stateville Correctional Center on Wednesday in Crest Hill, Ill. Terrence Antonio James/TNS /Landov hide caption Christopher Abernathy (center) is released from the Stateville Correctional Center on Wednesday in Crest Hill, Ill. Christopher Abernathy spent nearly 30 years in prison for the rape and murder of 15-year-old Kristina Hickey in 1984. Today, Abernathy, now 48, was freed after DNA evidence cleared him of any connection to the crime in suburban Chicago. Cook County Judge Frank Zelezinski agreed to vacate Abernathy's 1987 conviction following a request from the prosecutor. "The decision to vacate this conviction comes as a result of a comprehensive investigation by my office into the facts of this case which has revealed evidence that tends to exonerate Christopher Abernathy for the commission of this crime," State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said in a statement. Abernathy, who was 18 when he was arrested for Hickey's death, had confessed to the crime. Alvarez's statement said Abernathy "may have suffered from a diminished mental capacity" and said his signed confession didn't have any significant details about Hickey's slaying. The statement said recent DNA testing of the available evidence in the case did not match Abernathy's DNA … Continue reading

Research Team Finds How CBD, a Component in Marijuana, Works Within Cells

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise STONY BROOK, N.Y., February 11, 2015 A team of Stony Brook University researchers have identified fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs) as intracellular transporters for two ingredients in marijuana, THC and CBD (cannabidiol). The finding, published early online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, is significant because it helps explain how CBD works within the cells. Recent clinical findings have shown that CBD may help reduce seizures and could be a potential new medicine to treat pediatric treatment-resistant epilepsy. CBD differs from THC in that it is not psychoactive and does not bind to cannabinoid receptors. Some children who are resistant to conventional antiepileptic drugs have been reported to show improvement with oral CBD treatment. The Stony Brook research team found that three brain FABPs carry THC and CBD from the cell membrane to the interior of the cell. This action enabled them to conduct experiments inhibiting FABPs and thereby reducing anandamide breakdown inside the cells. Anandamide, an endocannabinoid, has been shown to have neuroprotective effects against seizures in basic research studies and this may turn out to be a key mechanism of seizure control, explained Dale Deutsch, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry and … Continue reading

Experts in Congenital Heart Disease in Children and Adults Will Discuss Field’s Challenges

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only At Cardiology 2015 Conference, Experts in Congenital Heart Disease in Children and Adults Will Discuss Challenges in the Field Newswise Scottsdale, Ariz., Feb. 11, 2015 Many aspects of pediatric cardiology are relatively new to the discipline. Only recently have physicians been able to accurately diagnose and characterize the myriad congenital cardiovascular conditions that occur, and begin to apply successful strategies for care. This week, an international group of more than 800 medical experts gather at the nations largest pediatric cardiology conference to discuss challenges in treating congenital heart disease in the fetus, neonates, children and young adults. Affecting one in 120 children, congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect, which in the most severe forms is also the leading cause of death in infants and young children. While the origins of congenital heart disease remain a mystery, diagnostic capabilities continue to improve, and treatment and management strategies continue to evolve. However, many anomalies remain difficult to treat effectively, said Jack Rychik, M.D., the conference course director and medical director of the Fetal Heart Program and the Single Ventricle Survivorship Program at The Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia. He added, as a … Continue reading
