American Epilepsy Society Calls for More Epilepsy Research Funding

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Hartford, Conn. February 9, 2015 The American Epilepsy Society (AES) the U.S. branch of the International League Against Epilepsy, joins epilepsy professionals around the globe in recognizing International Epilepsy Day and calling for more investment in epilepsy research. The need for more research was underscored by the World Health Organization in a January 29, 2015 draft resolution outlining the global burden of epilepsy and the need for more access to treatment and more investment in research worldwide. In the U.S., 1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy in their lifetime adding more than 200,000 new epilepsy cases annually to the 3 million already living with the condition. Yet, despite having an advanced medical system and access to treatments, 1 million Americans with epilepsy still experience on-going seizures. No current therapies exist to reduce development of epilepsy in those at risk due to brain injuries from trauma, stroke or other causes. Similarly, no therapies exist to prevent Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP) nor to treat the cognitive co-morbidities that negatively impact the quality of life of more than 1/3 of Americans with epilepsy. Additional research efforts are desperately needed to discover new … Continue reading

New Clot-Suction Technique Has Stroke Patients On The Mend

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2015

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO)-Cutting edge technology being used at a Twin Cities hospital could change the treatment for stroke patients. Abbott Northwestern is a comprehensive stroke center and specializes in a procedure called mechanical thrombectomy. Doctors use a machine with a catheter and suction to remove the stroke-causing blood clot, essentially like a miniature vacuum.. The recovery time can be much quicker than the traditional procedure of using medication to dissolve a clot. Few understand the impact of a fast recovery better than Kyle Smith. Two months ago, Smith was being rushed intoAbbott Northwestern.A blood clot in his carotid artery caused a massive stroke, paralyzing the right side of his body and his ability to speak. Ill tell you, its a life changing experience, for sure, Smith said.It really gave me a glimpse as towhat life looks like after youve had a serious stroke. Dr. Yasha Kadkhodayan performed the mechanical thrombectomy. The tools we used today and that I had available to me for Kyle, were not available even a year to 18 months ago, Kadkhodayan said. While most stroke recovery can take weeks, even months, Smith started regaining movement and speech almost immediately. This is one of those special cases where … Continue reading

Glenwood Regional Medical Center Implements Stroke Telemedicine Program

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2015

Press Release -- WEST MONROE, La. Stroke patients at Glenwood Regional Medical Center now have immediate access to highly specialized vascular neurologists as the result of a partnership between Glenwood and Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans (Ochsner). Through this network, emergency department physicians have the ability to consult immediately with Ochsner vascular neurologists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year using telemedicine equipment to determine the best treatment options for stroke patients. Telemedicine programs improve the quality of care for patients outside of urban areas by allowing them access to specialists and by reducing the costs associated with travel and the time spent away from work and family. If you dont live near a major hospital, you shouldnt have fewer options, says Liz Cothren, Director of Telemedicine at Ochsner. With the push of a button, within seconds of getting on an Internet browser, youre able to interact with a provider, added Cothren. Ischemic stroke is caused by a blockage in a blood vessel that stops the flow of blood to the brain and deprives the surrounding brain tissue of oxygen. In the absence of oxygen, the brain cells in the immediate area begin to … Continue reading

Family 'doted on' teenager who died after being given penicillin

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2015

The family of a teenager who died after doctors repeatedly gave her penicillin - despite knowing she was allergic to the drug - have urged patients to ask questions about their treatment. Ayaan Abdiqadir Maximed, who suffered from cerebral palsy, died after spending more than a month in hospital even though she was only admitted with a chest infection. The 14-year-old was admitted to Northwick Park hospital in Watford Road, Harrow, in November 2011 after developingan allergic reaction to medication prescribed for theinfection, where she was twice given penicillin - despite doctors knowing she suffered from an allergy to the drug. An inquest held at the North London Coroners Court from January 12 to 22 heard she suffered a severe allergic reaction and was then transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital for immediate treatment. However once Ayaan was transferred back to Northwick Park, doctors gave her another dose of penicillin at 6pm on December 15 and a second dose at 8am on December 16. Her condition rapidly deteriorated and she later died on December 25, 2011. Senior coroner Andrew Walker concluded Ayaans death was contributed to by neglect, and gave causes of death as septicaemia shock, bacterial infection, Stevens Johnsons Syndrome … Continue reading

Nano-antioxidants prove their potential

Posted: Published on February 9th, 2015

2 hours ago A polyethylene glycol-hydrophilic carbon cluster developed at Rice University has the potential to quench the overexpression of damaging superoxides through the catalytic turnover of reactive oxygen species that can harm biological functions. Credit: Errol Samuel/Rice University Injectable nanoparticles that could protect an injured person from further damage due to oxidative stress have proven to be astoundingly effective in tests to study their mechanism. Scientists at Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) Medical School designed methods to validate their 2012 discovery that combined polyethylene glycol-hydrophilic carbon clustersknown as PEG-HCCscould quickly stem the process of overoxidation that can cause damage in the minutes and hours after an injury. The tests revealed a single nanoparticle can quickly catalyze the neutralization of thousands of damaging reactive oxygen species molecules that are overexpressed by the body's cells in response to an injury and turn the molecules into oxygen. These reactive species can damage cells and cause mutations, but PEG-HCCs appear to have an enormous capacity to turn them into less-reactive substances. The researchers hope an injection of PEG-HCCs as soon as possible after an injury, such as traumatic brain injury or … Continue reading

More anti-aging regimens

PART 2 Last week, we discussed 19 ways to recapture youth. Our topics included melatonin, GABA, BHRT (Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy), DHEA, HGH, Epsom salt baths, going organic from food to cosmetics, exercise, sleep, proper hydration, multivitamins/mineral supplementation, glutamine supplements, probiotics, extra dose of vitamin C, daily fiber intake, exercise, nanotechnology, nondrug patches and natural medicine (pharmaceutical drug only when urgently needed). What to do 1) Address your acidity levels. The culprit and cause of disease is internal inflammation, a precursor of illness. Because inflammation is associated with acidity, it must be corrected because acidity is the perfect environment for cancer. It is also the condition conducive to developing yeast infection. Being too acidic or too alkaline isnt the goal. The ideal pH alkaline level must be around 7.0. The lower you go from 7.0, the more acidic you are. Alkaline foods are vegetables and fruits. Acidic foods are meat, poultry, eggs, legumes, grains, nuts and cheese. To prevent colds and flu, consume alkaline foods and take four alkaline minerals: magnesium, calcium, potassium and sodium.
