Scientist Ted Sourkes pioneered Parkinsons treatment

Theodore (Ted) Lionel Sourkes worked to solve the riddle of chemicals within the body like a detective in the mystery novels he enjoyed. He was both a biochemist and a neuropsychopharmacologist, a specialist who makes connections between different chemicals in the brain in order to understand and develop new medications for mental and neurological disorders. In this pursuit he was highly successful. Dr. Sourkes was one of the pioneers behind the concept of todays most effective treatment against symptoms of Parkinsons disease. The Montreal scientist also studied the metabolism of brain neurotransmitters and the role of vitamins in the nervous system. Long before the notion became widely accepted, he recognized that mental illnesses might be caused by biochemical alterations in specific regions of the brain. Dr. Sourkes died of pneumonia on Jan. 17 at Montreal General Hospital. He was 95. Dr. Sourkes had a reputation worldwide as one of Canadas great scholars. He published hundreds of papers, and wrote books, one on the biochemistry of mental disease (with the same title), and another on the history of Nobel Prize winners in medicine and physiology. Jerusalem, Feb 9: A naturally occurring peptide may lead to drug therapies for traumatic brain injury, stroke and heart attack, scientists say. Strokes, heart attacks and traumatic brain injuries are separate diseases with certain shared pathologies that achieve a common end cell death and human injury due to hypoxia, or lack of oxygen. In these diseases, a lack of blood supply to affected tissues begins a signalling pathway that ultimately halts the production of energy-releasing ATP molecules a death sentence for most cells. By employing derivatives of humanin, a naturally occurring peptide encoded in the genome of cellular mitochondria, researchers at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, Israel, are working to interrupt this process, buying precious time for tissues whose cellular mechanisms have called it quits. The present findings could provide a new lead compound for the development of drug therapies for necrosis-related diseases such as traumatic brain injury, stroke and myocardial infarction conditions for which no effective drug-based treatments are currently available [that work by blocking necrosis], said Abraham Parola, a professor of biophysical chemistry at Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Cell biologist, haematologist and project leader Dr Jim Faed, of the University of Otago, made the promise during the Lion's Lark in the Park event at Dunedin's Botanic Garden yesterday, which aimed to help raise some of the $2.46 million needed to run the trials. Dr Faed said their research involved trials using stem cells taken from the bone marrow of people with type 1 diabetes, and using them to stimulate insulin production. The cells appeared to be able to ''turn off'' the auto immune response that causes type 1 diabetes, he said. ''We see this as the low hanging fruit of research into a cure for type 1 diabetes because it has already been done once before.'' Trials had already been carried out on mice and humans.
