Posted: Published on February 8th, 2015

A TOP official of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), through the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), has approved the release of more than P200,000 study grant on transgender in Zamboanga City. DOST Regional Director Brenda Nazareth-Manzano said the study is entitled "Clinical and Metabolic Profile of Male-to-Female Transgender in Zamboanga City." It is expected to commence in March and shall be completed in six months period. Manzano said the research will receive funding assistance of P232,223 from the DOST-PCHRD through the Zamboanga Consortium for Health Research and Development (ZCHRD). The conduct of the study is in line with the growing number of transgenders in the country who are currently taking self-prescribed hormone replacement therapy, added Manzano. Dr. Alex Pang Jr., Zamboanga City Medical Center researcher and medical resident, said the study aims to increase awareness not only among male to female transsexuals, but also among health practitioners on the effects of taking self-prescribed cross-sex hormone therapy. Pang said the treatment of such individuals to acquire the physical appearance of other sex is through hormonal treatment or surgical manipulation. The study will also determine the characteristics of transgender currently or previously on cross-sex hormonal treatment, he … Continue reading

Frontiers | The antioxidants dilemma: are they potentially …

Posted: Published on February 8th, 2015

Introduction Antioxidants and a large number of natural supplements were introduced in recent decades (Lu et al., 2013). It has been hypothesized that antioxidant consumption might reverse oxidative stress which decreases the adverse effects elicited as outcomes of oxidative stress including inflammation, carcinogenesis, and atherosclerosis (Ghorbanihaghjo et al., 2012; Bjelakovic et al., 2014). A large number of studies have been conducted in order to convey evidence for beneficial effects of antioxidants in health and disease (Bjelakovic et al., 2012). However, most of these studies were conducted for a short time interval evaluating limited numbers of targeted biochemical markers both in animal and human studies. Only a small number of prolonged cohort studies have been performed to critically assess the effects of chronic consumption of antioxidants. Unexpectedly, in a recently published systematic review by Bjelakovic et al. on 78 randomized clinical trials on antioxidants supplementation including selenium, -carotene, vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E, not only have no favorable effects been observed, but additionally, mortality rates have risen (Bjelakovic and Gluud, 2007; Bjelakovic et al., 2012). Surprisingly, it has been shown that antioxidant supplementation may increase the risk of skin malignancy in women (Hercberg et al., 2007). There are also … Continue reading

Dumfries mother who lost her son to a rare genetic disorder defends new controversial IVF treatment

Posted: Published on February 7th, 2015

A mum who lost her son to a genetic disease has defended a controversial IVF treatment. Dumfries student nurse Beccy Foster believes MPs were right this week to permit the creation of babies with DNA from three people. The aim is to enable those with genetic disorders to have healthy children. Opponents claim it marks the start of a slippery slope towards designer babies. But Beccy, whose son Daniel McColm died of mitochondrial disease at five months, said: If these people had lost a child or family member through a disease like this they may feel differently about it. Its not about making designer babies. This is a terrible illness and the children born with it have a very low life expectancy. The treatment will give parents the chance to have a healthy baby and break the genetic chain. In a milestone for medical science, Britain is to become the first country in the world to allow the creation of so-called three-parent babies. MPs this week voted overwhelmingly in favour of the controversial technique three-person IVF babies to prevent some mitochondrial diseases being passed on in DNA. The law allowing the licensing of mitochondrial donation will come into effect in … Continue reading
