- stiff and inflexible muscles A person with Parkinson's disease can also experience a wide range of other physical and psychological symptoms, including depression, constipation, problems sleeping (insomnia), loss of sense of smell (anosmia) and memory problems. Seeking medical advice See your GP if you are concerned that you may have symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Your GP will ask about the problems you are experiencing and may refer you to a specialist for further tests. What causes Parkinson's disease? Parkinson's disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in part of the brain called the substantia nigra. This leads to a reduction in the amount of a chemical called dopamine in the brain. Dopamine plays a vital role in regulating the movement of the body and a reduction in dopamine is responsible for many of the symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Exactly what causes the loss of nerve cells is unclear. Most experts think that a combination of genetic and environmental factors is responsible. Neuroscience: The brain, interrupted

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

Illustration: Paddy Mills Fabienne never found out why she went into labour three months too early. But on a quiet afternoon in June 2007, she was hit by accelerating contractions and was rushed to the nearest hospital in rural Switzerland, near Lausanne. When her son, Hugo, was born at 26 weeks of gestation rather than the typical 40, he weighed just 950 grams and was immediately placed in intensive care. Three days later, doctors told Fabienne that ultrasound pictures of Hugo's brain indicated that he had had a severe haemorrhage from his immature blood vessels. I just exploded into tears, she says. Both she and her husband understood that the prognosis for Hugo was grim: he had a very high risk of cerebral palsy, a neurological condition that can lead to a life of severe disability. The couple agreed that they did not want to subject their child to that. We immediately told the doctors that we did not want fierce medical intervention to keep him alive and saw the relief on the doctors' faces, recalls Fabienne, who requested that her surname not be used. That night was the most tortured of her life. The next day, however, before any … Continue reading

St. Francis Health Center staff watch as a CT scan is performed on Peek the black bear. (Courtesy: Topeka Zoo) TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An American black bear at the Topeka Zoo may be the first bear ever to undergo stem cell treatment for a spinal problem. Zoo Director Brendan Wiley says Peek, who is 20-years old, started losing control of her hind legs two weeks ago. The condition worsened and zoo staff says pain medication was not having any impact on the situation. One of the unique things about this scenario is that Peek hasnt acted like anything is hurting her. It is like the front half of her body can no longer communicate with the back half, said Animal Care Supervisor Shanna Simpson. The zoo worked with St. Francis Health Center to perform a CT scan. Peek was tranquilized and transported to St. Francis' imaging facilities. "Our first priority is human patient safety and access," says Brent Wilkins, director of Imaging Services at St. Francis Health. "We work with … Continue reading

‘It could have saved me losing seven children’

ITV Report 3 February 2015 at 5:42am Sharon Bernardi lost six babies and her surviving son only lived until the age of 21. Credit: ITV News If pioneering IVF treatment, due to be debated in Parliament today, was around when Sharon Bernardi had her babies, her life could have been very different. Sharon had seven children, six of whom died before the age of two, after she passed on her damaged genes. Her son Edward, who she was told would not live beyond the age of five, survived until he was 21. But all her children suffered from Mitochondrial Disease, which means the cells in their bodies were not getting enough energy. There is still no cure for it and Sharon told ITV News how Edward would suffer spasms which left him crying for six hours at a time. She said: "You can't take away that pain. It's the worst." However, new IVF procedures have been developed which can substitute faulty genes passed on like mother's like Sharon for healthy ones before an egg is implanted in the womb. ITV Health Editor Rachel Younger reports: Last updated Tue 3 Feb 2015 Link: 'It could have saved me losing seven children' … Continue reading

Engineers devise genetic ‘on’ switch made exclusively of RNA

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

16 hours ago All life processes depend on genes turning on and off. Cornell University scientists have created a new "on" switch to control gene expression - a breakthrough that could revolutionize genetic engineering. Synthetic biologists led by Julius Lucks, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, have created a new genetic control mechanism made exclusively of ribonucleic acids (RNA). They call their engineered RNAs STARS - Small Transcription Activating RNAs - described online in Nature Chemical Biology, Feb. 2. "We've created a whole new toolset of regulation," said Lucks, who describes RNA as "the most engineerable molecule on the planet." RNA is a single-stranded version of its close cousin, DNA, which makes up the double-stranded genome of all living organisms. While DNA acts as nature's hard drive, storing the genes that make up our genome, RNA is part of the cellular computer that activates the hard drive by helping the cell tune the expression of specific genes, Lucks says. While RNA is known to do this in many ways, one thing it can't do in nature is start the process by turning on, or activating, transcription - the first step in gene expression, and the core of many cellular … Continue reading

It is based on a transcription of a lecture given by Dr. Bucaille in French. In this reprint, I decided to improve its presentation by simplifying the language and editing the text from an oral format to a pamphlet format. There were also passing references made by the author to material in his book, The Bible, the Quran and Science, which needed explanation. I took the liberty of including explanatory portions from his book where more detail was necessary. A few footnotes were also added for clarity and … Continue reading
