Dr. Keith Roach: It pays to check into lower cost meds

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2015

Dear Dr. Roach: My husband recently was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He was prescribed Lialda, and also was told that he would have to take it for the rest of his life. He is scheduled for another colonoscopy in a few weeks. This is a very expensive medication. We are senior citizens with a limited income. It seems there is a generic form of Lialda; however, his doctor did not prescribe it for him. He is feeling somewhat better on it. I know he is concerned about how he will be able to pay for it. His dosage started with four pills a day. His doctor has lowered it to three at this time. Is there a less-expensive medication available? His first prescription two months ago put him in the doughnut hole. The first of the new year, he will be ready for a refill. If there is any advice you can give us about our new condition, we would really appreciate it, as it is quite overwhelming for us at this time. We will have to live with it and manage it as we go. -- Anon. A: Ulcerative colitis is one type of inflammatory bowel disease (the other … Continue reading

Email: carol.curtin@umassmed.edu Research suggests that the prevalence of obesity in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is at least as high as that seen in typically developing children. Many of the risk factors for children with ASD are likely the same as for typically developing children, especially within the context of todays obesogenic environment. The particular needs and challenges that this population faces, however, may render them more susceptible to the adverse effects of typical risk factors, and they may also be vulnerable to additional risk factors not shared by children in the general population, including psychopharmacological treatment, genetics, disordered sleep, atypical eating patterns, and challenges for engaging in sufficient physical activity. For individuals with ASD, … Continue reading

Study hints at potential autism treatment

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2015

JACKSON, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from the University of Mississippi Medical Center Division of Public Affairs A team of Mississippi and California researchers have managed to prove something scientists have hoped to be true about the brain. It can be rewired. The research team's findings, published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), could one day translate into an effective treatment for patients with autism spectrum disorders, said the report's co-author Dr. Rick Lin, professor of neurobiology and anatomical sciences at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The findings, for now, are limited to the study's test subjects rats. But the results have proven that these animals' brains can be rewired via intense auditory behavioral training, said Lin. The intricacies of a brain's wiring remains one of the largest puzzles before scientific researchers who have spent years to solve pieces of the complex mechanism. Yet for every question answered, more seem to appear. So when the UMMC team, working with scientists at the University of California in San Francisco, discovered the potential reset button, the discovery immediately drew questions of what the findings could mean for the future of autism treatments and, … Continue reading

Stroke survivor backs FAST response campaign after speedy treatment at BRI

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2015

A BRADFORD stroke victim who recovered quickly after doctors treated him in record time is backing a charity's new campaign to help save more lives. The life-threatening 5cm clot in Keith Robertshaw's brain in July 2013 was the biggest doctors at at Bradford Royal Infirmary had seen, but he was given a wonder drug just 22 minutes after he got through A&Es doors - halving the national average time taken at stroke treatment centres of excellence. Now Mr Robertshaw, 72, from Allerton, is recovering and backing a new initiative by the Stroke Association to get more people familiar with signs of a stroke, known as the FAST Test. It identifies the three most common symptoms of a stroke or mini-stroke and the right action to take. FAST stands for Face - can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped? Arm weakness - can the person raise both arms? Speech problems - can the person speak clearly and understand what you say? And finally, Time to call 999. Mr Robertshaw and his family believe the FAST Test made a huge impact on his recovery and that swift action from his wife, Rita, meant he got the treatment he needed … Continue reading

The miraculous healing powers of oxygen

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2015

Paratrooper Ben Parkinson, who lost both legs aged just 22, meets Princess Anne The course of treatment depends on the individual patient, explains Prof James. It can be extremely arduous and is no quick fix. Ben will probably have 20 one-hour sessions over the next month and then be reviewed. Prof James, 73, emeritus professor of hyperbaric medicine at the University of Dundee, is one of the UKs foremost experts in the subject, having spent most of his professional life involved in deep sea diving, where high levels of oxygen are routinely used for brain and spinal cord injuries. His book, Oxygen and the Brain, which took him 20 years to write, was published at the end of last year . He passionately believes that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), still regarded with suspicion by much of the medical establishment, can be used to improve the treatment of a range of disorders, from traumatic brain injury like Bens to multiple sclerosis (MS). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is still regarded as quackery by many doctors because it is not taught in our medical schools he says. But it is simply a means of giving more of the oxygen we all breathe. We need … Continue reading

Acorda Announces Safety and Tolerability Data from First Clinical Trial of Remyelinating Antibody in Multiple Sclerosis

Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2015

Were encouraged by the outcome of this trial, which showed that rHIgM22 was well-tolerated at all of the dose levels we studied, said Anthony Caggiano, M.D., Ph.D., Acordas Senior Vice President of Research and Development. We are currently developing the protocol for our next Phase 1 clinical trial of rHIgM22. The data from this study will help inform the design of the next trial, which will enroll people with MS who are experiencing an active relapse. This was a multi-center, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study designed to evaluate safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and immunogenicity of a single dose of rHIgM22 in participants with any type of MS who were clinically stable for at least three months. All participants remained on their existing MS treatment regimens, including disease-modifying therapies. The first part of the study included five cohorts, with each cohort receiving a higher dose of rHIgM22 than the previous one. Each cohort consisted of 10 participants (eight receiving drug, two receiving placebo), who were followed for three months after receiving a single dose of study medication. In the second part of the study, 21 treatment-nave participants were randomized to receive placebo or one of the two highest doses of rHIgM22 from the … Continue reading
