Personal chemistry of Obama and Modi to drive Indo-US ties

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2015

Washington, Jan 31: The strong personal chemistry between President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi would drive the Indo-US strategic relationship, a top American Senator has said. I witnessed first-hand the strong personal chemistry between President Obama and Prime Minister Modi, and that will be very important as our countries work together to strengthen this vital strategic partnership, Senator Mark Warner, Co-Chair of the Senate India Caucus, the only country-specific caucus in the US Senate, said. He was one of the four lawmakers who came with Obama during his three-day visit. Warner said it was thrilling to experience the real sense of optimism and enthusiasm for reinvigorating the US relationship with India. Many of the announcements made during our three-day trip were incremental, but they nonetheless represent genuine signs of progress, he said in the monthly newsletter of the Senate India Caucus. Noting that it was his honour to accompany Obama this week to celebrate Indias Republic Day, the commemoration of the adoption of Indias democratic constitution in 1950, Warner said he was proud to attend as co-chair of the bipartisan Senate India Caucus. As two of the worlds largest democracies and with the incredible Indian American population that … Continue reading

Brewers partner with colleges to teach science of beer

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2015

TAMPA When you pour yourself a cold one, youre probably not thinking about the complex series of biochemical reactions that take place in order for malted barley, hops, water and yeast to turn into beer. But local craft brewers are taking the chemistry of beer seriously. Theyre partnering with the University of South Florida St. Petersburg on an internship program that is sending students from science disciplines into new labs built into brew houses in St. Petersburg and Tampa. Theres a lot of science in beer, said Desiree Chubb, who is working toward an associates degree in biotechnology at State College of Florida in Bradenton, after performing a yeast cell count at 3 Daughters Brewing recently. Chubb is one of five interns based in labs at 3 Daughters and Green Bench Brewing Co. in St. Petersburg and Cigar City Brewing in Tampa, with several more local brewers expected on board soon. The internship typically yields three credit hours and requires about 160 hours of work. The students are required to write a paper on quality assurance. Insert a joke about college students and beer if you must, but the interns take their work very seriously. Zyad Asi, also based at … Continue reading

Biotech: Record Investments in Pioneering Firms

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2015

A series of recent investments in the biotechnology sector reflect the innovative power of specialised pharmaceutical firms making scientific breakthroughs in the development of new treatments. The first fortnight in January saw some well-attended biotechnology industry conferences in San Francisco. As every year, these gatherings provided a platform for investment firms to meet up with innovative companies. The highest turnout this year was at the 33rd annual JP Morgan Healthcare Conference on 12-15 January and the Biotech Showcase on 12-14 January, which brought together the main biotech sector stakeholders for the seventh year running. The San Francisco events were indeed an opportune moment to look at the results for 2014, a year in which the biotech industry loomed large, with 81 companies making their stock market debut. Health and biotech investor Stelios Papadopoulos thinks that 2015 could be another notable year for biotechnology, with for example Google Ventures focusing hard on this field. Major advances in medical science achieved by R&D breakthroughs at specialist biotech companies include more efficient DNA sequencing and the development of new treatments for a number of chronic illnesses. The conferences showcased both the latest innovations on the health front and recent high-value transactions in the … Continue reading
