US proposes effort to analyze DNA from 1 million people

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2015

InterAksyon.com The online news portal of TV5 WASHINGTON - The United States has proposed analyzing genetic information from more than 1 million American volunteers as part of a new initiative to understand human disease and develop medicines targeted to an individual's genetic make-up. At the heart of the "precision medicine" initiative, announced on Friday by PresidentBarackObama, is the creation of a pool of people - healthy and ill, men and women, old and young - who would be studied to learn how genetic variants affect health and disease. Officials hope genetic data from several hundred thousand participants in ongoing genetic studies would be used and other volunteers recruited to reach the 1 million total. "Precision medicine gives us one of the greatest opportunities for new medical breakthroughs we've ever seen," Obama said, promising that it would "lay a foundation for a new era of life-saving discoveries." The near-term goal is to create more and better treatments for cancer, Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), told reporters on a conference call on Thursday. Longer term, he said, the project would provide information on how to individualize treatment for a range of diseases. The initial focus on … Continue reading

More diversity needed for stem cell registry, MD says

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2015

When a child is fatally ill with leukemia, a stem cell match can mean restored health and a chance to live. If the child is Caucasian, there is a reasonable chance a stem cell donor will be found. If the little one is of a different ethnicity, chances are slim. The sad truth is that if the sick person is in an ethnic group and if no family member matches, then there is a very slim chance of finding a match, even with 20 million people in the registry across the world, Dr. Mohammed Almohammadi said Friday. The use of stem cells what Almohammadi calls seeds for restored health is increasing for a variety of illnesses, but mainly in blood and marrow diseases like leukemia and lymphoma. The stem cells extracted from a healthy match can help the ill person grow new cells, which often leads to a new lease on life. Almohammadi, one of the organizers of a registration event Saturday in Halifax, says in some parts of the world, the idea of stem cell therapy seems like a luxury. There are some places that are fighting disease like Ebola and dont even have registries like this, he said. … Continue reading

Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) January 30, 2015 Dr. Louis DeJoseph, one of the partners of Premier Image Cosmetic & Laser Surgery and one of the respected cosmetic surgeons in Atlanta, has announced that his practice has added Restylane Silk as a new injectable treatment. According to Dr. DeJoseph, Restylane Silk is the first and only FDA-approved product designed for subtle lip enhancement and to treat nasolabial folds, which are the wrinkles and lines that form around the mouth also known as smile lines. Restylane Silk consists of a clear gel that is comprised of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural sugar found in the skin. The gel formula is then injected into the skin with a specially designed ultrafine needle. Because Restylane Silk utilizes smoother and smaller particles than what is typically used in other Restylane treatments, it creates more natural-looking results. The ideal candidate is anyone wanting softer, fuller lips, said Dr. DeJoseph. Premier Image Cosmetic & Laser Surgery began offering Restylane Silk on January 22 to patients. Dr. DeJoseph said typically patients will begin to see their desired results after just one treatment.
