Lobo women winning with depth, leadership

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2015

........................................................................................................................................................................................ Positive team chemistry is notoriously hard to pin down, but its certainly a valuable commodity. The University of New Mexico womens basketball team has managed to find that upbeat mentality in recent weeks and its showing on the court. The Lobos have won five of six and suddenly seem capable of a strong second-half run in the Mountain West race. UNM (9-10, 5-3) has shaken off the gloom of its 1-7 start and now has what point guard Bryce Owens calls a good vibe going. Different players have starred at various times, leaders have emerged and the bench has developed into a team strength. Eleven Lobos played at least five minutes in Saturdays 60-54 win over Wyoming at the Pit. Its definitely fun when everybodys able to play and contribute, junior Alexa Chavez said. Thats been happening for us and its so nice. I feel like this teams coming together. Last weeks 63-60 home win over UNLV could serve as Exhibit A. UNMs two leading scorers, Antiesha Brown and Khadijah Shumpert, were out in the second half of a tight game (Brown fouled out, and Shumpert left the Pit in an ambulance after suffering an allergic reaction to food). … Continue reading

‘Fred Talbot gave us masturbation practice as homework’, former pupil Ian Brown tells court

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2015

TV weatherman Fred Talbot gave masturbation practice as homework, former pupil and Stone Roses singer Ian Brown told a court today. Brown, 51, was taught biology by Talbot, who worked as a teacher before his TV career took off, and told the jury the defendant showed his class a gay porn film in school. Talbot, 65, denies 10 offences of indecent assault on five boys while working as a teacher between the late 1960s and the early 1980s and is on trial at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester. Today Brown, lead singer of Manchester band the Stone Roses, told the court he was a pupil of Talbot at Altrincham Grammar School from 1974 to 1979. Wearing trainers, jeans and an open-necked shirt, Brown said in the 1970s the all-boys grammar school was a violent place - but Talbot was one of the few teachers who did not physically hurt pupils. Mr Brown said he remembered in particular two or three biology lessons given by Talbot when he was an 11-year-old boy. The witness said: Very early at school, I would not have been there a long time, Mr Talbot asked all the class if any of us had ever … Continue reading

Made-in-Singapore test kit detects dengue in 20 minutes

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2015

SINGAPORE: A new rapid test kit will soon allow dengue diagnosis in just 20 minutes, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) said in a news release on Thursday (Jan 29). The paper-based disposable device developed by the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) of A*STAR detects dengue antibodies in saliva. This is faster than the current diagnosis process of taking blood samples and testing it in a laboratory for dengue antigens or antibodies. Unlike blood samples, saliva can be collected easily and painlessly. The kit can also detect dengue antibodies from early-stage secondary infections of dengue. Patients with secondary infections, who have previously contracted different strains of the dengue virus, stand a higher risk of developing dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome. "The ability to differentiate between primary and secondary dengue infections makes it a valuable early diagnosis tool that would help to ensure timely treatment and proper care of patients," said IBN Executive Director Professor Jackie Y Ying. Early diagnosis is crucial as the incubation period before dengue symptoms develop generally ranges from four to ten days after infection, and timely intervention can help prevent further complications. Typically, paper-based tests are not designed to handle large … Continue reading
