Stem cell register boosted by Taunton event in memory of Margot Martini

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

A TOTAL of 275 people became potential life savers by registering on the stem cell donor register in Taunton on Saturday. Becki Robertshaw organised the event, which involved giving a mouth swab, at North Street Church in memory of toddler Margot Martini, from the Midlands, who died of blood cancer last year. Buskers played outside, with face painters and Anna and Elsa from Frozen also appearing, as the incredible response boosted the number of registered donors in Somerset by an amazing 45% and a raffle raised 2,000 for the Delete Blood Cancer charity. Simon, who had a bone marrow transplant 12 weeks ago, took his wife along so she could register. Margots father, Yaser, who drove down from London to attend, said: The Team Margot donor drive in Taunton was a triumph. These are relatively small numbers and what we really need is for the rest of the county and indeed the nation to step up and do something so simple, and yet so meaningful, which can potentially save a life. It's a great start along the longer journey were aiming at getting 4% of the UK population onto the stem cell register, which means we wish to encourage another … Continue reading

Bendheims Channel Glass Is Central to Design That Connects At Indiana Universitys Neurosciences Research Building

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

(PRWEB) January 27, 2015 Bendheim Wall Systems channel glass is central to the interior design of the new Neurosciences Research Building of Indiana Universitys School of Medicine, Indianapolis. Bendheims channel glass was selected for its distinctive structural and aesthetic qualities: from the ability to span great heights to its characteristic linearity. The channel glass walls create a translucent stacked tower at the core of the wrap-around main staircase, connecting multiple floors and adjacent collaboration spaces. Designed by architects at BSA LifeStructures, the 140,700 sq.-ft. facility brings together research and clinical care focused on neurological disorders. The design purposefully connects clinicians, scientists, and patients in one location to break down the traditional barriers between research and clinical care, and facilitate the translation of scientific discoveries into practical applications. Bendheim Wall Systems Inc. provided 4,000 sq. ft. of tempered channel glass for the signature tower at the heart of the building. Architects selected Piccolo, a fine, corduroy-like texture, whose miniature facets add a sense of movement and energy to the space. The unique application of a translucent white coating to the back of the textured glass channels boosts the towers light-diffusing, slightly obscuring effect. While a typical colored channel glass application employs … Continue reading

Tweaks not tucks: plastic surgery numbers are on the slump

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

Breast augmentation is down by a quarter while breast reduction is up, and for the first time in years, cosmetic surgery is on the decline Last year, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (BAAPS) reported that cosmetic procedures were up by 16.5 per cent - numbers of nose jobs, liposuction, tummy tucks and face lifts had reached an eye-watering 50,122 in the UK. This year however, the stats are a little more subtle, and they've also been deflated. According to BAAPS, the number of cosmetic operations has decreased by nine per cent in the last 12 months, with breast augmentations for example, still the most popular procedure (there were 8,609 last year), plummeting by 25 per cent. Tummy tucks and nose jobs also decreased by 20 per cent reports, the BAAPS. IN PICTURES - Celebrities with 'new' faces Interestingly too, for the first time in five years, the order of popularity of procedures has shifted. While conspicuous cosmetic work is down, what BAAPS describes as, "tweaked, not tucked" procedures - the more subtle work if you will - including eyelid surgery, face lifts and fat transfer ops whose numbers all went unchanged, while breast reductions were up by three … Continue reading

TV star's plastic surgery disaster puts quest for beauty to test in Brazil

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

SAO PAULO - Andressa Urach went from being a single teenage mom nicknamed "Beanpole" to a reality TV bombshell in Brazil thanks to silicone implants, anabolic steroids, a nose job, and gel and botox injections, a fact she wasn't ashamed to share with fans. "There are plenty of ugly women," she said last year. "If you have the money, you can be beautiful. This pretty face you see here, my dear, it costs some." More, it turns out, than she bargained for. The 27-year-old Urach, arguably Brazil's most outspoken advocate of advancement through cosmetic surgery, recently went into septic shock and was placed on life support after a botched operation to augment her thighs, sparking a debate about the risks Brazilian women will take for beauty at a moment when the nation has surpassed the U.S. as the world's plastic surgery capital. It led the runner-up in Brazil's "Miss Bum Bum" contest to express regret "that I put that poison in my body, mostly because of having too much vanity." Urach appeared on television this week for the first time since falling ill two months ago, her wounds still so fresh that blood could be seen soaking through her skirt. … Continue reading
