Heartbroken former politician Bruce McFee and wife discover son aged 4 dead in bed

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

A heartbroken former politician has paid tribute to a beautiful, smiling four-year-old son, after he passed away this weekend. Bruce McFee had taken a step back from politics to care for Marten, who lived with severe cerebral palsy, with his wife Iris. The youngster was discovered by his mother after passing away in bed on Sunday evening, reports the Daily Record. Former West of Scotland MSP Bruce told the Paisley Daily Express: It was a bolt out of the blue because he was making good progress. My wife Iris discovered him in his bed. "He had had a good day, and had been out with his mum and brother at a park in Glasgow that has facilities for disabled children. Iris came upstairs at 10.15pm with a cup of water for him because he usually woke up around 11pm feeling thirsty. He wasnt moving and she came running in to me saying dial 999, Marten isnt breathing and has been sick. When I held him, he was cold ... there was nothing. I started CPR and called 999, but he was gone. A special Facebook page devoted to Marten and his progress made the sad announcement about his passing away. … Continue reading

Up to half of these patients will experience progression of bleeding inside or around the brain, the occurrence of which is associated with an increased risk of death. A common treatment to prevent progression of "traumatic intracranial hemorrhage" is the transfusion of platelets, which are irregular shaped cells that cause blood to clot, and the administration of desmopressin (DDAVP), a naturally occurring hormone used to treat bleeding and a number of other medical conditions. A new study from Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) researchers, published online ahead of print in the Journal of Neurotrauma, finds this treatment is not effective in preventing further bleeding in the brain or in reducing the risk of death for patients with TBI. "Previous studies of … Continue reading

Analysis of skull fractures in medieval Denmark reveals increased risk of death later on in life

Milner; collection, ADBOU University of Southern Denmark (Phys.org)A trio of researchers with members from Denmark, the U.S. and Germany has found that a group of men living in medieval Denmark who had healed head traumas had a 6.2 percent higher chance of dying at any given time than did other men in the general populace. In their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Jesper Boldsen, George Milner and Svenja Weise describe their study of skulls found in medieval cemeteries and how it relates to the modern study of traumatic head injuries. Traumatic head injuries have been in the news a lot of late, primarily because of later life lingering impacts being reported by athletesbut it is also common with soldiers and victims of car accidents. Scientists would like to better understand what happens to people who survive such events later on in life because it might lead to more effective treatments early on. To learn more, the research trio examined the skulls of men whose remains had been dug out of … Continue reading

Analysis Rejects Linkage Between Testosterone Therapy And Cardiovascular Risk

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only AUTHOR VIDEO AVAILABLE AT: http://youtu.be/3j232kdcnSQ Newswise BOSTON Fears of a link between testosterone replacement therapy and cardiovascular risk are misplaced, according to a review published in this months Mayo Clinic Proceedings. The therapy has come under widespread scrutiny in recent months, including by a federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel convened last fall. Theres no good evidence that we could find that testosterone therapy increases cardiovascular risk, says lead author Abraham Morgentaler, MD, of Director of Mens Health Boston and a urologist on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Thats not to say its perfectly safe. But we cannot find evidence and the headlines that jumped out on recent retrospective studies appear to be too strong. Importantly, and under-recognized among physicians, Morgentaler adds, review of the literature clearly reveals a strong relationship between higher serum testosterone concentrations as being beneficial for reduction in cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors. Testosterone is a hormone that, during puberty, helps build a man's muscles, deepens his voice and increases the size of his reproductive organs. As adults, men rely on the hormone to keep muscles and bones strong and to maintain an interest in … Continue reading

Obokata may face criminal charges as former colleague alleges she stole stem cells

Posted: Published on January 28th, 2015

A criminal investigation now seems likely in the STAP stem-cell research debacle after a former Riken researcher filed a criminal complaint against disgraced scientist Haruko Obokata, alleging she stole samples of embryonic stem cells before reporting that she had created her version of stem cells with a novel technique. Toshihisa Ishikawa, a former senior researcher at the government-affiliated scientific research organization, submitted the complaint to police in Hyogo Prefecture, where Obokata as a Riken researcher conducted her stem-cell research. The work secured publication in the prestigious science journal Nature and was widely hailed as groundbreaking before allegations of fabrication emerged. Ishikawa was not immediately available for comment Tuesday, but press reports have carried his account of what he believes happened. I am convinced the ES cells Ms. Haruko Obokata used to fabricate her STAP cells were those she stole from the research room of Mr. Teruhiko Wakayama, the latest issue of the gossip weekly Friday quoted Ishikawa as saying. Im going to file a criminal complaint against her alleging that she stole the ES cells, because otherwise confidence in Japans science will be entirely lost. The prefectural police have yet to decide whether to accept Ishikawas complaint. A Riken spokesman … Continue reading
